ABOUT THE ADELPHI THEATRE

The Adelphi Theatre is conveniently located in the West End of London midway between The Aldwych and Trafalgar Square on The Strand.

Since the 1806 opening of The Sans Pareil Theatre on The Strand, there has always been a theatre located on this site; although not without suffering several identity crises!

The theatres´ name changed to The Adelphi Theatre in 1819 and again in 1829 to The Theatre Royal, Adelphi. By 1850 it was in need over an overhaul and after being demolished and refurbished to seat 1,500 people, it reopened with the same name in 1858, although changing again in 1867 to The Royal Adelphi Theatre.

Pushing on 40 years later, with the theatre as popular as ever, various modifications were made to seat fewer people and it reopened in 1901 as The Century Theatre. But yet again, after a 6 month public outcry, the name reverted back to The Royal Adelphi Theatre. In 1930 the theatre underwent an ´Art Deco´ style reconstruction, designed by architect Ernest Schaufelberg, reopening with the musical production Evergreen starring Jessie Matthews (also the star in the film version). But of course 10 years later, in 1940, another name change saw the theatre become The Adelphi Theatre - that we now know and love.

Following the success of Evergreen, other productions from the 40´s & 50´s included Word and Music, Nymph Errant and The Dancing Years. The musical Charlie Girl opened in 1965 and ran for over 2,000 performances, and in 1985 the huge hit Me and My Girl opened which ran for a staggering 8 years. The theatre was yet again thoroughly refurbished for the 1993 opening of Andrew Lloyd Webbers´ Sunset Boulevard, David Schwimmer, from the television comedy ´Friends´, made his West End debut at The Adelphi with Some Girls and the children's classic Wind in the Willows also ran here for a period of time.

But the infamous song All That Jazz has been blasting from the theatres´ stage since the current smash hit musical ´Chicago´ opened in November 1997, which became the longest running production at The Adelphi Theatre in October 2005.

The Adelphi Theatre is air cooled which although not as effective as air conditioning is a bonus in Summer. Like most London theatres, leg room is not very generous.

The nearest underground stations are Covent Garden and Charing Cross. Buses also run regularly along The Strand.

When purchasing tickets for mainstream theatre productions, it is important to keep the following in mind.

The cheapest way to buy tickets is to buy directly from the theatres´ box office where the show is playing. Or, purchase your tickets from the ´Half Price Ticket Booth´ (AKA ´tkts´) located in Leicester Square, where they sell ´on the day´ tickets for all of the West End shows at a discount rate. The booth is open Monday to Saturday from 10am - 7pm and Sundays from 12pm - 3.30pm. There is a service fee of £2.50 per ticket and a maximum of 4 tickets per person. Avoid touts hanging about the theatres and any other ticket agencies around the West End that appear a little dodgy as tickets may not be legitimate. You can also purchase a theatre and hotel package which saves money all round.

However, the best thing to do if you have your heart set on seeing a particular show is to book ahead. You will be guaranteed a good seat, a great view and a fab night out.

Just 1500 metres walk away from the Adelphi Theatre, is the Royal National Hotel one of the largest tourist class hotels in London. The St Giles hotel, also 1500metres away on Tottenham Court Road, offers a swimming pool and gym.

More upmarket is The Savoy Hotel, a traditional British 5 star also located on the Strand and just two minutes walk from the Adelphi Theatre.

For a hip hotel check out the Covent Garden Hotel or the Sanderson Hotel, both are very pricy but quite exclusive
