The Bank of England is situated in the heart of the City of London, along Threadneedle Street EC2, Lothbury EC2 and Princes Street EC2. The Bank of England is north of the river Thames and can be reached via London Bridge, which leads into King William Street EC2, from which this stunning landmark can be seen. St Paul's Underground Station, on the Central line, is located 500m west of the Bank of England, along Poultry EC2 and Cheapside EC2. This direction leads to Holborn, Covent Garden and London's famous West End. Bishopsgate lies 300m east of the The Bank of England and can be reached via Threadneedle Street. From here visitors will be able to see the Tower 42 building, one of London's tallest structures, the controversial Lloyds of London tower and the modern Swiss Re building, widely referred to as the 'Gherkin'. The grand Mansion House and Royal Exchange buildings are situated opposite the Bank of England next to Bank Underground Station. Bank Station has links to the Central, Circle, District, Northern and Waterloo & City lines, as well as the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Other stations close to the Bank of England include Cannon Street (250m) and Mansion House, which is 400m away from this landmark along Queen Victoria Street EC4. Both these underground stations are on the Circle and District lines.
The Bank of England was originally built on its current site in 1788, but much of the impressive building today is from the 1920's, when the Bank of England was redeveloped by designer Herbert Baker. This hugely secure building has just one public entrance, in the Bank of England Museum, which is situated in Bartholomew Lane EC2. This museum, which is free to enter, has interactive displays highlighting the history of the Bank of England and also displays minted coins, notes and gold bars, as well as a one million pound note. The Bank of England Museum is open Monday to Friday and on the day of London's annual Lord Mayors Show.
The Bank of England is situated in a historical district of London often referred to as the Square Mile and is just 250m from London Wall. The Guildhall is just 200m from the Bank of England on Gresham Street EC2. The cathedral like structure here is the main feature of the Guildhall, which is home to the Corporation of London. The Guildhall is also home to a huge library, the Clock Museum and the Guildhall Art Gallery, which has extensive collections of artwork depicting London, in addition to many other displays. Although closed when hosting events, the Guildhall is usually open daily and visitors are welcome to take tours of this impressive venue. People interested in viewing the striking Bank of England building can walk north along King William Street EC2 from Monument Underground Station, as this leads directly to Bank Station. Moorgate Station is just 300m north of the Bank of England and is within easy reach of Liverpool Street Station, through Finsbury Circus EC2. There are many high street stores located along Moorgate EC2 and Finsbury Pavement EC2 including Marks & Spencer and Gap.
