Bevis Marks EC3 connects the north of the City of London's Square Mile, at Bishopsgate EC3, with the east at Aldgate EC3. Positioned between Camomile Street EC3 and Duke's Place EC3, Bevis Marks is named after Burics Marks, the former townhouse of the Abbot of Bury St Edmunds, which was once located here. Bevis Marks, which runs alongside Houndsditch EC3, is close to a number of mainline and London Underground Stations.
Bevis Marks is home to the historic Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, also known as the Bevis Marks Synagogue. Located between Heneage Lane EC3 and Bevis Marks, this place of worship is one of the oldest in London, after being established in 1698 by Jewish people from Portugal and Spain. The Bevis Marks Restaurant is also located in this area, at 4 Heneage Lane EC3, in the middle of Bevis Marks. This popular Jewish restaurant provides its own mixture of contemporary and traditional kosher cuisine, in a luxurious environment.
Bevis Marks is home to a variety of offices of financial and insurance companies and while busy Monday – Friday, it is quiet at weekends. Bevis Marks House, a striking office complex, is located on the south side of Bevis Marks, close to Camomile Street and St Mary Axe EC3. The Swiss Re tower, also known as the Gherkin, is positioned in this area, at 30 St Mary Axe EC3. This 40 storey environmentally friendly structure was designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners and officially opened in May 2004. At 178.8m high, the Swiss Re is one of Europe's tallest skyscrapers and dominates the London skyline. The Lloyd's of London building and exclusive Leadenhall Market are located between Leadenhall Street EC3 and Lime Street EC3, which has a junction with St Mary Axe.
Bevis Marks is 250m from Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, which is located at 25 Old Broad Street EC3, close to Bishopsgate. This huge structure is home to the Rhodes Twenty Four restaurant and Vertigo 42, a restaurant and champagne bar that is located at the top of Tower 42. From here guests can experience excellent views across London, of landmarks including the BT Tower, Monument and St Paul's Cathedral.
Bevis Marks is close to Aldgate Underground Station, 200m east on Aldgate High Street EC3. Fenchurch Street mainline station is 300m south of Bevis Marks and is linked to Tower Hill Underground Station, on the Circle and District lines. Tower Hill is 100m from Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Station, from which passengers can reach destinations including the Excel centre, London City Airport and Stratford. Liverpool Street mainline and London Underground station, which has a large shopping area, is 250m north of Bevis Marks. Liverpool Street Station is one stop from Bank on the Central line, where the Bank of England building, stunning Mansion House and the magnificent Royal Exchange stand.
