Cheapside EC2 is in the heart of the City of London, close to the central areas of Moorgate EC2, Finsbury Square EC2 and London Wall EC2, one of the oldest areas of the City. Cheapside was a former site of one of the principal produce markets in London. (Ceap or chepe was the Old English word for market.). Many of the streets feeding into the main thoroughfare are named after the produce that was originally sold there such as, Honey Lane EC2, Milk Street EC2 and Bread Street EC2.
There are many interesting places to explore in and around Cheapside EC2, the most famous landmark being St. Paul’s Cathedral, 50m south of Cheapside. London old est cathedral, St Paul's was designed by Sir Christopher Wren after The Great Fire of London destroyed the original. The nearest Underground station is St. Paul’s, on the Central line. The Museum of London is also located in this area, at 150 London Wall EC2, 450m north of Cheapside. Fragments of the original London Wall itself can be seen outside the Museum of London. Cheapside is also close to the impressive Guildhall and its medieval Great Hall, built in 1411. Home to the Corporation of London, the Guildhall is located 250m north of Cheapside on Gresham Street EC2. The annual Lord Mayors Show is centred around the Guildhall and receives visitors from across the world.
Cheapside EC2 is home to the church of St Mary-le-Bow, home to the famous ‘Bow Bells’ located in Bow Churchyard EC4. All those born within the sound of the bell are said to be true cockneys. Other places of interest in the area include The Bank of England, the central bank of the United Kingdom, sometimes known as the ‘Old Lady’ of Threadneedle Street, located on Bartholomew Lane EC2, 200m east of Cheapside. Underground: Bank (which is linked to Monument Station) on the Northern, Central, Circle and District lines. Cheapside EC2 has a wide chain of restaurants including the prestigious Ball Brothers chains of restaurants and bars 5/6 Carey Lane EC2, located between Cheapside and Gresham Street EC2, minutes from St. Paul’s Station. The restaurant serves mouth-watering dishes which includes, roast garlic & rosemary rack of lamb alongside grilled lemon sole. The bar here opens 11.00am-11pm everyday and serves lunches including freshly cut sandwiches and light snacks.
St. Giles Cripplegate, EC2, built in 1550, stands on the site of a Norman church, 600m north of Cheapside, on Fore Street EC2, close to Moorgate Station. The Barbican Centre on Silk Street EC2, is located between Aldersgate EC1 and Beech Street EC2, 700m north of Cheapside. The Barbican holds conference and arts events, featuring theatre, cinema, music, restaurants and exhibitions. The nearest Underground station is Barbican, served by the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines. Cheapside is also close to the Monument, which is the tallest isolated stone column in the world, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, located 400m south-east of Cheapside on Monument Street EC3 and Fish Street Hill EC3.
