Custom House EC3 is located on Lower Thames Street EC3, between Old Billingsgate Market and Byward Street EC3. London Bridge is 350m west of Custom House, while Tower Bridge stands 500m east. Custom House is the London headquarters of the Customs Service, positioned facing the River Thames. The first Custom House was built east of the current site in 1275 and a number of buildings have been constructed here, after former structures were damaged. Sir Christopher Wren created a Custom House here between 1669-7 after the previous building was burned down in the Great Fire of London. The current building is mainly the work of David Laing, who built Custom House here in 1813. The building received some damage in the Second World War and sections were rebuilt to Laing's original plans.
Custom House is 200m from the Tower Hill Visitors Centre, located on Tower Hill, along one section of the Tower of London. Here visitors will be able to get information on opening times and prices of visiting the Tower and of the Beefeater guided tours in place here. There are also fast food outlets and gift shops on Tower Hill. The All Hallows by the Tower church is 200m east of Custom House. All Hallows is thought to be the oldest church in the City of London and has a Roman and Saxon museum. St Katharine's Dock is 500m east of Custom House, close to Tower Bridge and International House, at 1 St Katharine's Way E1.
Custom House is close to many landmarks within the Square Mile of the City of London. This includes the Plantation Place office complex (200m north) located at 31-35 Fenchurch Street EC3, with sections on Rood Lane EC3 and Mincing Lane EC3. Mincing Lane is also home to the three building Minster Court complex, which is 150m north of Custom House. Minster Court, which also stands on Mark Lane EC3 and Dunster Court EC3, is home to the London Underwriting Centre, as well as popular bar and restaurants Balls Brothers, on Mark Lane EC3 and Bar Med, at 3 Mincing Lane EC3.
Custom House is 300m east of the Monument, which is located on Monument Street EC3 and Fish Street Hill EC3, close to where the Great Fire of London started on Pudding Lane EC3. The viewing platform here provides visitors with amazing views across London. Landmarks that can be seen from the Monument's 41 metre viewing platform include Tower 42, the Lloyd's of London tower and the impressive Swiss Re, also referred to as the Gherkin, a Sir Norman Foster and Partners designed skyscraper that opened in May 2004. King William Street EC3 is 400m west of Custom House and leads north to Bank, where the Bank of England, Mansion House and Royal Exchange buildings stand.
Custom House is 200m west of Tower Millennium Pier, an alighting point of the Silver Fleet river boat shuttle service. Passengers can travel to a number of destinations along the River Thames from here, including Victoria Embankment, close to Waterloo Bridge. Tower Hill Underground Station is 350m from Custom House and is served by the Circle and District lines, as well as the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) at Tower Gateway Station, which is connected to Tower Hill. Travellers can use the DLR service to reach many destinations including Canary Wharf, London City Airport and Stratford. Monument Underground Station, which is linked to Bank, is 350m east of Custom House, along Eastcheap EC3 and Gracechurch Street.
