Located at 202 Bishopsgate in the City of London is Dirty Dicks pub. This historic London EC2 pub sits at the corner of Bishopsgate and Middlesex Street and directly behind it is Petticoat Lane. Dirty Dicks is situated opposite Liverpool Street Station.Dirty Dicks was named after Nathaniel Bentley, an ironmonger who worked on nearby Leadenhall Street in the late 18th century. It is suggested that after his wife-to-be passed away on the eve of their wedding day, Bentley locked the dining room, which was filled with food prepared for the wedding celebrations and never re-entered. From this point he did not wash or change his clothes and became known as Dirty Dick. After Bentley’s retirement in 1804, the owner of the nearby Old Port Wine Shop, bought Bentleys property and displayed the content, including the dead cats that had been left there. This became the Dirty Dicks public house we see today and proved to be a very popular drinking establishment with locals. Dirty Dicks remains a busy venue with a unique warmth and charm. Visitors can relax and enjoy the wide selection of real ales served in the 3 bars here, which are situated on different floors. The wooden beams and exposed brickwork add to the traditional atmosphere of this unusual public house, which is now owned by the Young’s brewery chain.
