ABOUT THE DOMINION THEATRE
The Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road is a little hard to miss with its large figurine of a man standing over the entrance with a stance not unlike a dance move belonging to John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever. This figurine however is the mascot for the West End sensation 'We Will Rock You', now in its 4th year at the Dominion, based on songs by Queen and written by comedian & author Ben Elton and Queen's guitarist Brian May.
Situated a little further away from the rest of the gang in 'theatreland', the Dominion is a fabulously big venue, albeit a little scruffy, and it has been utilised for theatre, cinema (still occasionally used movie premieres), opera and variety shows since its doors first opened in 1928. It has also hosted some fabulous concerts including performances by Judy Garland and Shirley MacLaine.
The Dominion is now mainly used for musical theatre and apart from lengthy, successful runs of 'South Pacific' and 'The Sound Of Music' during the 50's & 60's, a production of 'Grease' which ran from '93 - '96 and Disney's 'Beauty & The Beast', there has been the odd flop including 'Grand Hotel' and 'Bernadette', proving again that Broadway hits don't always work the same magic on a West End audience.
Other recent productions include the singing legend Cliff Richard's West End debut in 'Time' - a musical by David Clarke, and of course the current production 'We Will Rock You' whose run is finishing at the Dominion in October 2006 to begin a tour of the UK.
Once being seating a staggering capacity of almost 3,000 over 3 levels, the Dominion now seats a little over 2,000 only utilising the stalls and front circle. The theatre serves from 4 bars and has wheelchair access.
Tottenham Court Road is the closest underground station to the Dominion Theatre.
The cheapest way to buy tickets is to buy directly from the theatres“ box office where the show is playing. Or, purchase your tickets from the “Half Price Ticket Booth“ (AKA “tkts“) located in Leicester Square, where they sell “on the day“ tickets for all of the West End shows at a discount rate. The booth is open Monday to Saturday from 10am - 7pm and Sundays from 12pm - 3.30pm. There is a service fee of £2.50 per ticket and a maximum of 4 tickets per person. Avoid touts hanging about the theatres and any other ticket agencies around the West End that appear a little dodgy as tickets may not be legitimate. Always ask if your seat is in a restricted viewing area. You can also purchase a theatre and hotel package which saves money all round.
However, the best thing to do if you have your heart set on seeing a particular show is to book ahead. You will be guaranteed a good seat, a great view and a fab night out.
