Fenchurch Street EC3 is a busy shopping and office area situated in the heart of the City of London. Fenchurch Street runs east-west from Gracechurch Street, close to the Monument, through to Aldgate in the East of London and is 560m in length. To the west is the Bank of England and the Royal Exchange. The Tower of London is 400m to the northeast, the Lloyds Building is 200m to the north as is Leadenhall Market. Bishopsgate is 200m walk. Fenchurch Street Station serves many destinations across East London and Essex, receiving over 28,000 passengers during weekday mornings. One unusual feature of this station is that it does not have its own underground stop, however, Tower Hill Underground Station is located nearby and is easily accessible from Fenchurch Street Station. Tower Hill Underground Station, which is on the Circle and District lines, provides an easy way for travellers to move around London effectively.
This area is often very busy during the daytime as there are many offices located in close proximity to Fenchurch Street. The huge variety of restaurants and bars located in this area provide a great environment in which travellers can relax after a busy day exploring London. The City Flogger, located at 120 Fenchurch Street, is a popular bar that serves traditional British dishes from midday onwards and has an extensive wine menu.
Fenchurch Street is close to the St Clement Church Eastcheap, which is situated just off Gracechurch Street, in Clements Lane EC3. This place of worship dates back to the 11th century and was redesigned by Sir Christopher Wren, alongside many other churches in the area, after the Great Fire of London in 1666. This church is thought to have inspired the nursery rhyme ‘Oranges and Lemons’. The tune of this nursery rhyme can be heard coming from the bells of St Clement Church.
Fenchurch Street is also the location of the striking Plantation Place. This huge office complex was designed in 2004 on a Roman site that was more recently the venue for tea trading deals. There are over 10,200 square metres of office space in this location, which is situated in the centre of Mincing Lane, Eastcheap and Rood Lane, as well as Fenchurch Street. Plantation Place has beautifully kept roof gardens, from which people can experience breathtaking views of London’s financial district and beyond. These gardens have been made open for public viewing on occasions.
Hotels near to Fenchurch Street tend to be mid to upmarket in order to cater for the predominently business travel market sector. Prices are high in the week and cheap at the weekend as the hotel vie for higher occupation levels from leisure travellers. Weekend visitors should remember that this area is only 1200m from St Pauls Cathedral, 2700m from the London Eye, 2400m from Covent Garden and 3000m from the West End and Theatreland. All of which can be accessed from the Fenchurch Street area within a few minutes.
