The Guildhall Clock Museum, also known as The Museum of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, is located left of the historic Guildhall Library in Guildhall Yard EC2, between Aldermanbury and Gresham Street EC2, within the financial district of the City of London. The Guildhall Clock Museum stands close to Basinghall Street EC2 and King Street EC2, which was built after the ‘Great Fire of London’ in conjunction with Queen Street EC4 to link the Guildhall with the river Thames.
The Guildhall Clock Museum houses the finest collection of clocks, watches and time related items in existence. The company’s collection was first displayed in 1814. The Guildhall Clock Museum illustrates 500 years of time-keeping in London. Famous pieces on show here include the watch worn by Sir Edmund Hillary when he climbed Mount Everest in 1953 and a silver skull watch thought to have belonged to Mary Queen of Scotts. The collection is based in the large Clock Room, within the grounds of the Guildhall. Entry to the Guildhall Clock Museum is free and visitors are welcome between 09.30am-16.45pm Monday to Friday. The Guildhall Art Gallery and the Grand Hall of the Guildhall, home to the Corporation of London, stand alongside the Guildhall Clock Museum.
The Guildhall Clock Museum is close to a number of places of interest within the City of London, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s most famous landmarks (500m south-west) situated at St. Paul’s Churchyard EC4 and Ludgate Hill EC4. The Museum of London, situated at 150 London Wall EC2, is located 400m north-west of the Guildhall Clock Museum, close to remains of London Wall itself. Other places of interest close to the Guildhall Clock Museum include Tower 42, 500m east at 25 Old Broad Street EC2 and the Barbican centre, located 500m north. The Royal Exchange, Bank of England and Mansion House can be found surrounding Bank Station, 300m south-east of the Guildhall Clock Museum.
