Aldermanbury, which means alderman's manor, dates back to the 14th century and is thought to have been named after Aethelred, the son in law of Alfred the Great, who was once Governor of London.

Aldermanbury is home to the St Lawrence Jewry church, which also stands on Gresham Street. St Lawrence Jewry dates back to the 12th century and was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren between 1671-77, after receiving extensive damage in the Great Fire of London. St Lawrence Jewry, which has an entrance on Guildhall Yard, was again restored in the 1950's after bomb damage in World War Two.
