One of twenty-five wards in the City of London, the ward of Bishopsgate covers the area from Worship Street in the north to London Wall in the south. "Bishopsgate" refers to an ancient road extending north from Gracechurch Street to Norton Folgate and derives its name from its being one of the original seven gates in London Wall. In the 1700s the gate was used to display the heads of criminals on spikes. However, by 1760 the actual gate was destroyed without ever being replaced. In more recent times, the financial services industry has taken up residence in much of Bishopgate's office spaces, including obsolete railway stations. The remnants of the original Roman-era Bishopsgate today form part of the A10.

Towering over Bishopsgate (and indeed cutting an impressive profile on the whole of London's skyline) is the thirty-five storey Broadgate Tower, which along with the adjoining thirteen storey 201 Bishopsgate, overlooks an open public plaza. The two buildings together constitute Broadgate development, which includes the ever-bustling Liverpool Street Station and accounts for approximately half of the ward. A number of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes for any and all tastes and budgets may be found round the development.

Although the working population in Bishopsgate numbers in the tens of thousands and 300,000 commuters pass through here daily, there are less than fifty full time residents. Originally, Bishopsgate was home to a number of inns, accommodating passengers setting out on the Old North Road. Although these inns survived the Great Fire of London, none exist today except in name as some modern pubs, such as the White Hart, have assumed the names of these historic inns. Today, Bishopsgate and the general area round Liverpool Street Station still host a variety accommodation options, from mid-range bargains to luxury upscale hotels like Andaz London. There are plenty of dining and drinking options as well including an assortment of pubs and virtually every type of restaurant imaginable.

Well within easy walking distance of Bishopsgate is the newly renovated Spitalfields Market, featuring several vendors selling everything from antiques and vintage vinyl to cutting edge fashion, handicrafts and new art.
