About ExCel

British gangster movie buffs will fondly remember the sight of Bob Hoskins ploughing along the Thames in a pleasure boat, champagne-toasting his dreams of building a new metropolis along the disused slums of east London's Docklands in 1980's The Long Good Friday. Harold Shand was just a movie character but there's nothing fictional about his vision: so far removed from the dilapidation of thirty years ago, now the neon lights of Canary Wharf dominate the London skyline, home to 100,000 financial and media employees, 500,000 shoppers each week and highlighting Docklands as one of London's boom districts.

The newest symbol of the energetic redevelopment of this area is the ExCeL Centre. Purpose-built in 2000 to host exhibitions and events of an international significance, the 100-acre centre has been visited by some of the world's most powerful people - from boxer Amir Khan and the brutes of the WWE in 2005 to US President Barack Obama in 2009's G20 Summit.

The huge waterside complex has conferences selling everything from comic books to cars, ideal homes to arms, and is one of the city's leading centres for business events. With excellent transport links, a wide range of good hotels, quality food & drink outlets onsite and a location right at the heart of an area being transformed by Olympic Games development, the ExCeL Centre and its Docklands surroundings are sure to go from strength to strength in the run-up to 2012.

Hotel ExCel

The ExCel is built like a campus with the exhibition halls to the east and the hotel complex to the west of the campus. Between these two is a wide boulevard with fantastic views of the River Thames, therefore staying in a hotel at Excel is very convenient if you are attending the exhibition center, however, everything else in London is a Docklands Light railway plus a tube ride ride or an expensive taxi trip.

Travelling to ExCel

One of the main factors in the rise of Docklands is the area's outstanding public transport links, and the ExCeL Centre is very well served by rail, underground and air services.

There's no less than three Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations onsite at the ExCeL - Prince Regent, Royal Victoria and the main gateway at Custom House.

The DLR serves all of east London and is a fast, comfortable and convenient way to travel Docklands: you can connect direct from central London via Bank in 25 minutes, or change at Canning Town (two stops from Custom House) onto the Jubilee Underground line.

Canary Wharf, home of many shops, bars and restaurants as well as the iconic skyscrapers of east London's new financial hub is also just four DLR stops from Custom House.

Travelling to the ExCeL from Europe couldn't be easier: the capital's smallest but most convenient airport, London City, is five minutes from the ExCeL via DLR or taxi, and this single-strip airport - famous for ease of check-in and its unusually central location - is connected to many of Europe's business centres.

As Olympic Games development gathers pace, a new transport hub at Stratford International will be served by the Eurostar, and the DLR will eventually link the station to Custom House within ten minutes for international rail travellers visiting the ExCeL.

The centre will be converted into four sports halls for 2012, and the area around will surely benefit even more from the surge of funding transforming this once run-down corner of London for the Games. Drivers visiting the ExCeL will find easy access from the M25, M11, A406 and A13, and there's 4,000 parking spaces onsite as well as a 1,200 capacity park and ride service on Peruvian Wharf.

By Tube: The Jubilee line is recommended as the quickest route to ExCeL London.

By Road: When driving to ExCeL London follow signs for Royal Docks, City Airport and ExCeL There is easy access to the M25, M11, A406 and A13.

By Air: London City Airport (adjacent to ExCeL London) is the leading airport in Europe dedicated to the business traveller.
