One of the world's most famous theatres thanks to the 'Live at the London Palladium' TV variety series - hosted by Bruce Forsyth in the 60s and Jimmy Tarbuck during its 80s revival - this has been the West End venue that young performers dream of playing for over 50 years.

Maybe this explains its pull to major artists over the Palladium's century in business: Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jnr and Ella Fitzgerald all performed here in its 20th century heyday; Marvin Gaye recorded his finest live album here, and of today's generation, Rufus Wainwright presented some magical tribute concerts to his hero Judy Garland recently, another great Palladium alumni.

The theatre began life as a circus space - attractions included an aquatic display in a flooded ring - and briefly became an indoor ice rink, before the early 20th century passion for variety took hold of the Palladium, which quickly came to dominate London's variety world. Musicals moved in by the late 70s with Yul Brynner's The King and I, and recent converts to the West End - again via the medium of TV, this time a voting show to choose a star from a pool of unknowns - flocked to the Palladium to see Connie Fisher in The Sound of Music.

The convent-based campery of Sister Act, based on the smash hit Whoopie Goldberg movie, opens in May and is booking for a year so another huge hit is expected in the refined surroundings of the Palladium.
