About the American Embassy

Grosvenor Square is one of many exclusive enclaves built in the 18th century for fashionable Mayfair residents, and it's been the official London home of our cousins from across the pond since as long ago as 1785. It's now dominated by the Embassy of the United States of America, one of the largest diplomatic presences in the world with 800 employees and visibly high security needs - the Embassy takes up the entire west side of the square.

Despite the much-vaunted special relationship, the Americans in London are often dogged with controversy and drama: the Duke of Westminster refused to sell the property to the US Government in 1938 unless they returned disputed Grosvenor family land in Virginia dating back to the Civil War, and a recent storm erupted over former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone's Congestion Charge, from which the US and many other ambassadorial staff claimed exemption from - their current unpaid bill is £3m and counting.

It's also a focus of regular protests, to the point where the Embassy may be moving lock stock to a more secure Wandsworth location over the next five years. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in World War II and a future US President based his wartime headquarters at number 20, and a statue of the military great stands proudly in the square.

Grosvenor Square is five minutes from Marble Arch underground, and visiting diplomats are very well served by a surfeit of luxury hotels and restaurants in the vicinity, including Gordon Ramsay's stylish Maze in the square itself.

A word of warning. Whilst in Grosvenor Square, do not take any photographs of the US Embassy. You will be approached by security and possibly interrogated under the prevention of terrorism regulations.

This is Mayfair so do not expect to find a cheap hotel here although many offer cheap weekend rates to make up for the loss of the weekday corporate visitors. There are three hotels within immediate proximity to the Embassy. There are two within the actual square one of which is the Millennium Mayfair. A stately Georgian townhouse that was once the home of the Duchess of Kendal now offers classic comfort at one of Mayfair's most famous squares. The stately and reserved Millennium Mayfair brings the atmosphere of the 18th century private club to life. Overlooking Grosvenor square, the hotel is in the neighbourhood of Oxford Street and Mayfair shopping, the exclusive boutiques of Bond Street, Hyde Park, and the Royal Academy of Arts, though sheltered enough to be a quiet retreat. Also in the square is the Marriott Grosvenor Square, originally built as a stately townhouse, the new bedrooms are tastefully designed with plush bedding, garden views, flat screen televisions and WiFi internet.

Just off the square on Brook Street we have one of the worlds most famous hotels, Claridges which is a British Institution. In the 1930's, there was a major redesign which resulted in half of the rooms being art deco and the remaining ones Victorian. In saying that, now all 200 rooms offer 21st century facilities and leading designers have been recruited to ensure that this leading London hotel is a perfect place for the discerning traveller to stay.
