Perched at the bottom corner of Soho just by Piccadilly Circus's bright lights and the retail frenzy of Regent Street, the Piccadilly's modest facade contains a gorgeous Art Deco interior, stunning when the theatre opened in 1928 and still a delight now.

One of many similar playhouses in and around the Shaftesbury Avenue area - the main artery of theatreland - and holding 1,232 spectators, there's a lot of pink in and around the interior of the Piccadilly and appropriately enough, Pink Ladies and T-Birds flirt the night away in Grease, a fixture here since 2007.

The rock 'n' roll musical has been a favourite with audiences in London since Richard Gere was the West End's first Danny Zuko in 1973 and it's rarely out of theatres for more than a year - X Factor runner-up and current Dancing With Ice superstar Ray Quinn originally joined the cast as Doody, and gets promoted to the part of Danny until October 2009.

Though nowadays a home of safe musical fare such as this, the Piccadilly's been radical in its time: once a cabaret restaurant called the London Casino, it imported Broadway dramatic heavyweights like Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? and A Streetcar Named Desire in the 60s, and in the 90s patronised a lot of ballet and dance, scoring a huge hit with Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake.

There's so many great restaurants and bars hidden in the side streets of neighbouring Soho that's its hard to know where to start recommending; a few doors down, Chowki changes its menu monthly to offer up three different regional Indian cuisines at bargain prices, and the Nordic Bakery in nearby Golden Square off James Street serves up - you guessed it - hearty Scandinavian open seafood sandwiches, mind-blowingly good coffee and sweet pastries to the media workers congregated in this part of town.
