The London History abounds in this 1,500 capacity playhouse, originally called the Sans Pareil in 1806 and subsequently rebuilt four times. The current Ernest Shaufelberg-designed Art Deco building went up in 1930, and was restored to its former splendour in 1993 by Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Really Useful Group for the opening of Sunset Boulevard. Now the Adelphi is one of the West End's homes of the mega-musical: it housed the razzle-dazzle of Chicago for nine years, and currently plays host to Lloyd-Webber favourite Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring the angelic reality TV sensation Gareth Gates (until 30th May 2009).
Its location on the Strand is perfect for the numerous pre-theatre menus of Covent Garden - most offer three courses of good value fare served speedily. Or even better, try Wahaca on Chandos Street around the corner, a huge hit with Londoners wanting to sample locally sourced, great value and more importantly, stunningly tasty "Mexican market food" in a vibrant environment - be warned that tables can't be booked in advance, so turn up early and prepare to queue. And for after the show, the bars of Villiers Street by Charing Cross or Covent Garden itself are always lively. Tickets for the Adelphi start at £14.50-£75.
