Shaftesbury Avenue is the main artery of Theatreland, with a playhouse at nearly every other door bookended by Piccadilly Circus to the west and the gorgeous Palace Theatre to the east, at the junction with Charing Cross Road.

The Apollo is one of four theatres standing shoulder-to-shoulder at the Piccadilly end, and much like its neighbours, has a rapidly rotating programme of quality plays with a celebrity carrot dangling to attract audiences to what would otherwise be a hard sell - in the last year alone, Josh Hartnett, Will Young and Jessica Lange have trodden the boards here.

The Apollo was actually the first Edwardian theatre built in London and thrived on a diet of light musical comedies for many years before becoming a stopping-post for hit comedies in the 70s and 80s.

Like most of the venues in this part of town, much of the appeal of visiting the Apollo comes from the ghosts of those who've plied their trade on the stage in front of you - Gielgud, Olivier, Ralph Richardson, John Mills, Margaret Rutherford... Stand by the stage door in the Soho night and you can almost imagine Peter O'Toole and Albert Finney arguing it out over a cigarette.

The Strand Palace is only a very few minutes easy stroll to Covent Garden, the London Eye and Drury Lane.
