Collosal in size - its capacity currently nudging just over 2,000 from a peak of nearly 3,000 in the 1940s - and located on the junction of A 250-seat studio in the centre of Covent Garden that under the reign of Artistic Director Michael Grandage has become one of London's, if not the world's, most influential theatres, the incredible success of the Donmar - 30 Olivier award nominations and 12 Tonys since 1992; actors like Ewan MacGregor, Derek Jacobi and Rachel Weisz queing up to be involved - is a theatrical fairytale.

The former brewery backroom was bought by Trevor Nunn's Royal Shakespeare Company in 1977 and became a home for their more innovative work, including a new two-hander they found on top of a pile of submitted scripts in 1980 called Educating Rita, one of their biggest ever commercial hits.

Sam Mendes - husband of Kate Winslet and Oscar-winning director of American Beauty - made the Donmar independent in 1992 and started the glory years rolling, with productions like Nicole Kidman in The Blue Room that saw the world's eyes turned on this tiny studio space.

Now focused on new writing and starry adaptations of classics, they have a production of this year's major feature film Frost/Nixon - a Donmar creation - touring the US, a year-long residency at nearby Wyndham's including Jude Law as Hamlet and Dame Judi Dench in Madame De Sade, as well as the usual outstanding productions at their home venue.

Because of the calibre of productions here tickets are often gold-dust, as anyone who queued unsuccesfully to see Ewan MacGregor in Othello would attest to, so it's well worth booking long in advance of a visit.
