Once called the Fortune Thriller Theatre, this Covent Garden playhouse is almost guaranteed to chill your spine a little.

Hidden away close to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane and one of the smallest theatres in town with just 432 seats, it's been the home of the terrifying Woman In Black for the last seventeen years, a show which can send even the hardiest theatregoer shivering away into the London night.

Stephen Mallatratt's spectral tale is a ghost story within a ghost story, as an elderly lawyer enlists a sceptical young actor to tell his mysterious tale - performed by just two actors (or is it!), it's a West End mainstay and the current cast is fantastic.

Plenty more ghosts undoubtably stalk the Fortune too: this was the site of the Cockpit Theatre of the early seventeeth century, as well as the Albion Tavern, a favourite haunt of many Georgian and Victorian-era actors.

After the current Fortune opened in 1924, spiritualist mediums became a major attraction here, finding the building's spooky vibe ideal for channelling the energies of the other world into live entertainment.

The goddess above the door, incidentally, is Terpsichore, the Greek muse of dance.
