Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0HH
Nearest Tube: Piccadilly Circus
Named after David Garrick, the legendary Shakespearean actor who re-popularised the bard in the 17th century - there's also a high-faluting member's club in nearby Soho similarly titled - and situated at the bottom of Charing Cross Road, the Garrick has a regular turnover of interesting shows.
The location is perfect for the sightseer: one minute away from Trafalgar Square's fountains, the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery - both free to enter, and worth a day out in themselves.
St Martin's Lane has some great restaurants and is bookended by branches of Pret a Manger for quick pre-theatre snacks. And there's more commercial fare like McDonald's, Angus Steakhouses and the famous Haagen-Dazs cafe in Leicester Square just over the road as well as the Tkts discount booth, the first port of call for any visiting theatregoer.
This classically-designed theatre was financed by WS Gilbert of ... & Sullivan fame, and opened in 1889 - despite initial teething problems when engineers discovered a previously unknown underground river in the foundations dating back to Roman times.
The Garrick has mounted productions from farce to Shakespeare, musicals to murder mysteries in its time as West End fashion dictates; these catholic ethics are continued today, as recent productions at the Lloyd-Webber-owned theatre include One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest with Christian Slater, Zorro - The Musical, and modern-day wizard Derren Brown's Evening of Wonders.
Currently playing until July is a transfer of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music, one of the most beautiful scores in all of musical theatre - the original production at the Menier Chocolate Factory sold out months in advance, and the show stars Maureen Lipman and Kelly Price.
