Grosvenor Square is a lovely and large garden square located in the ritzy district of Mayfair and is close to Park Lane and Berkeley Square. Taking its name from the Duke of Westminster's family name and Mayfair property, Grosvenor, it was once one of the top 5 fashionable areas to reside in from when construction began around 1721 until WWII. Many notable members of society called Grosvenor Square home and it still is a beautiful place to live, although today's residents no longer have the pleasure of having their own private garden to loll in, as the square is now a public park.
Most houses were demolished in the 20th century and generally blocks of flats line the square today, along with various hotels and embassies. But the buildings were built in Georgian and
Neo-Georgian style (the classic architecture style between 1720 & 1840) so the old worldly and decadent feeling around this Mayfair square remains.
Under very heavy guard on the western side of the square is the American Embassy. Grosvenor Square has been the London home to official American presence since 1785 and the two sculptures of President Roosevelt and President Eisenhower pay tribute to this. At the opposite end of the square are the Italian and Canadian embassies.
There are some beautiful hotels surrounding the square and they include the Millenium Hotel London Mayfair, the Park Lane Mews Hotel, Claridges Hotel and the Marriott Grosvenor Square. Hamiltons Gallery is on Carlos Place, just off the square, which is nice to pop into and check out the photographic exhibitions.
A couple of delicious restaurants to note in the area are Maze, a French boutique restaurant which is fabulous (but if you don't like fish or snails then best you try somewhere else!) and Brian Turners of Mayfair which is located in the Millennium Mayfair Hotel. With his own flare on traditional English food, Brian Turner certainly leaves your taste buds completely satisfied.
It is definitely worth taking a stroll through Grosvenor Square, even if it's just to stop to relax in on a sunny day. Plenty of room for some Frisbee action too! A word of warning, our photographer was aprehended in Grosvenor Square for taking photographs of the Embassy so be warned !

The closest underground station is Bond Street, only a 5 minute walk away. Marble Arch is also an option as are Oxford Street, Hyde Park Corner and Green Park. With the delights of Oxford Street and Bond Street shopping only a few minutes walk away and the stunning Hyde Park very close as well, Grosvenor Square is a nice stopping point between the two.
