Hotels near Her Majestys Theatre
Haymarket, SW1Y 4QL
Nearest Tube: Piccadilly Circus
Facing the Theatre Royal Haymarket and with an equally auspicious history, Her Majestys Theatre has been the home of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Phantom of the Opera since 1986, and is now owned by the impresario.
Its name changes every half-decade or so depending on the gender of England's monarch: the four theatres on this site have been called the Queen's, the King's, His Majesty's, and briefly in its heyday as a magnet for European society in the 1830s, the Italian Opera House. Opera, indeed, was the theatre's main programme from 1709 onwards after a law was passed banning the playhouse from showing anything else; George Frederick Handel premiered his English debut at Her Majesty's, and produced 25 new works there over as many subsequent years.
As was all-too common for the candlelit theatres of the period the original burnt down in 1789, and its second incarnation (1791-1867) saw it at the centre of London's social life, with the beautiful elite of Europe mingling at the premieres of new operas before flames once again put paid to the venue.
The third His Majesty's lasted 42 years until 1892 and survived the fiery fate of its predecessors; the current building opened in 1897, and its flat, wide stage and tricksy Victorian stage machinery for special effects are perfect for musicals - Arabian Nights song-&-dance spectacular Chu Chin Chow, recently revived for a sell-out run at the Finborough Theatre and memorably described as "the first British racist musical" ran for an amazing 2,235 performances after WWI, and other huge hits like Paint Your Wagon and Fiddler On The Roof debuted here.
Phantom arrived in 1986 and shows no signs of flagging yet: Lloyd-Webber's grandiose tale of a masked man haunting the opera houses of 1911 Paris has the perfect setting with Her Majesty's, and the fact that it's been a consistent sell-out for over 9,000 shows is testament to its ability to still amaze and delight.
