Hotels near Bond StreetBond Street, Mayfair, London, W1H

For a firsthand look at how London's wealthiest prefer to shop and to take a gander at what products the Royal Family deems appropriate for their purchases, head over to Bond Street. This Central London street has been a famous and fashionable shopping district since the 1800s. Despite its elite standing, Bond Street is easy enough to access. Indeed, it has its own Bond Street Tube Station (on the Central and Jubilee lines) at the corner of Bond Street and Oxford Street.

This major shopping destination runs through Mayfair from Piccadilly to Oxford Street. Although, technically there is no Bond Street at all. Rather there are two streets, Old Bond Street (the southern bit) and New Bond Street (the northern bit). The northern part is referred to as "New" as it was added in a second phase of development, with the Old and New streets being complete by 1746. Generally speaking, common parlance refers to both in the singular as simply Bond Street.

These two streets are named after Sir Thomas Bond, head of a syndicate of developers that transformed Mayfair into the elegantly Georgian residential area we know today. The streets have been memorialized in great works of literature, such as Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. One unique feature of Bond Street is the "Allies" statue of Winston Churchil and Franklin D Roosevelt. Created by Lawrence Holofcener, the work portrays the two World War Two era leaders sitting behind one another on a park bench having a conversation. Sharing the same colour as Regent and Oxford Streets, Bond Street is a square on the British Monopoly board.

Originally, Bond Street was renowned for its top end art galleries and antique shops, including the London office of Sotheby's auction house. Sotheby's have retained its Bond Street location for more than one hundred years, as has the Fine Art Society which has been here since the street was founded in 1876. A number of reputable galleries remain.

Today Old and New Bond Street host some of London's most glamorous and exclusive shops. Visitors here can expect the likes of top brands such as Gucci and Armani as well as a number of retail locations for Royal Warrant holders (businesses that supply the royal family). A list of Bond Street shops reads like a who's who of today's most prominent brands and top designers: Donna Karan, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nicole Fahri, Armani, Versace and Ralph Lauren. Expect nothing but the best in global fashion and British refinement during your jaunt to Bond Street.
