Walk from Holborn towards the Aldwych and buried in what looks like a university campus on your left, you will find the Peacock Theatre. Close by, within a 15 minute walk, is the St Giles Hotel, a 3 star modern hotel which offers cheap prices. It looks like a campus because it is; the Peacock leads a curious double life, home to Britains finest young business minds as a lecture theatre for the London School of Economics by day, and the West End home of leading dance company Sadler's Wells by night.

Sadlers as a receiving - and recently, a production - house has a long and noble tradition of showcasing the very best in ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dance, and their history traces way back to the early years of the Old Vic Theatre Company and the management of Lilian Baylis.

Both English National Opera - who own the Coliseum Theatre, another venue where Sadlers Wells often produce work - and Birmingham Royal Ballet came out of the Sadlers family, and as well as owning their own theatre in Clerkenwell, they present more populist shows here at the Peacock including lots of Latin American dance companies and contemporary performers from around the world.

There has been a playhouse on this site since the 17th century and it's haunted by one of theatrelands strangest ghosts: a dolphin met with a sticky end in the Peacock during a 1930s variety performance and even today, staff and visitors report a spectral squeaking under the stage, which may or may not be caused by the theatre's close proximity to the Central Line underfoot.
