South Kensington underground station is a Zone 1 tube station located within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on Cromwell Road in South Kensington. It is serviced by the District and Circle lines (green & yellow) between Gloucester Road and Sloane Square and the Piccadilly line (dark blue) between Gloucester Road and Knightsbridge. Hotels near to South Kensington Underground Station are plentiful, ranging from 4 star to budget. The Rembrandt Hotel is only a 5 minute walk away on Thurloe Place and offers indoor leisure in a true British style environment. West of the station is the Montana Hotel, a good 3 star choice with a great track record of happy guests.
Located between the two extremely wealthy districts of Knightsbridge and Chelsea, the area to the north of South Kensington station is most famous for housing three of London's greatest, and FREE, museums; the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum - all of which have pedestrian entrance tunnels leading from the station. Although also classified as a moneyed district, South Kensington is a student mecca as well with the prestigious Imperial College and various language schools also occupying the area.
To the north of ´museum-land´ is the spectacular Royal Albert Hall (home to the summer classical music festival the ´Proms´) which is positioned along the edge of the beautiful Kensington Gardens where Kensington Palace resides. North-east of the station is Hyde Park and Knightsbridge, where you will find world famous department store Harrods located on Brompton Road (the world's most expensive shopping street) - and a little further on to the east is Sloane Street, Sloane Square, Belgravia, Buckingham Palace and Victoria Station. In the south is Chelsea Hotels (home to the annual Chelsea Flower Show), Kings Road (great for antiques) and the River Thames, south-west down Fulham Road is the Chelsea Football Club and Fulham Broadway, west of the station is Old Brompton Road and Earls Court where the Earls Court Exhibition Centre is located and north-west of South Kensington is the district of Kensington where you will find high street shopping treats on High Street Kensington and the Olympia Exhibition Center is just a little further on.
The shopping is great in the streets surrounding South Kensington tube station, especially down Fulham Road, and the cafes and restaurants too (try Cedar Lounge on Pond Place just on the other side of Fulham Road). The area is also wonderfully multicultural with a mix of Italian, Spanish and French living in the district with a great French cinema located in the French Institute and French bookshops and cafes to discover as well. Close to the South Kensington Underground is the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle where up to 3000 students attend. Located on Cromwell Road this educational institution is the home base to many French expatriot students.
Most of London's Underground Stations have disabled access via lifts, and when you hear the recorded voice on every train platform advising you to ´mind the gap´, this really is advice that should be taken seriously.
