| With over 15 million people passing through Victoria Station every year, it's of no wonder that it is one of London's largest and busiest train stations. Located within the City of Westminster, the station has entrances on Victoria Street, Hudson Place, Grosvenor Gardens, Terminus Place, Wilton Road and Bucking Palace Road (also where the Victoria Coach Station is located). National Rail services the southern commuter areas as well as trains heading for Kent and the south coast and it is where the Gatwick Express leaves from taking you to Gatwick Airport in around 30 minutes. The London Underground service also runs from here via the Victoria line (light blue) between Pimlico and Green Park stations and by the District & Circle lines (green & yellow) between St. James's Park and Sloane Square.
The station is in a super central location within walking distance to many of London's shopping districts, attractions and landmarks. Located to the north of the station is Buckingham Palace, Green Park, St James's Park & St James's Palace and the beginning of the West End where to the north-east are hot-spots such as Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus, with Oxford Street and Soho just a little further on. Directly to the east of the station on the other side of Vauxhall Road is the extraordinary architecture of the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral and if you keep heading east down Victoria Street you will discover New Scotland Yard (Police H.Q) on Broadway, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and a great view of the London Eye. Tate Britain is a little to the south-east alongside the River Thames, the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, King's Road, South Kensington and Sloane Square are south-west of the station and Knightsbridge (home to Harrods department store), the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are north-west of Victoria Station.
Most of London's underground and train stations have disabled access via lifts, and when you hear the recorded voice on every train platform advising you to ´mind the gap´, this really is advice that should be taken seriously. It is also a universal fact that busy underground train stations and crowded city areas are a haven for pick-pockets, so just be a little streetwise with your belongings. And as for underground entertainment, there are now over 300 legal buskers singing their hearts out or playing instruments for travellers and commuters throughout the majority of underground stations. Busking within the passageways and in ticket areas became a legalised and sponsored scheme in 2003 and all entertainers have auditioned for the right to perform. However, they are NOT paid by the sponsor or by the London Underground so if you like what you hear, support the cause. They're certainly far more entertaining then the mice and the pigeons that call the LU home (and use the train service), but just as friendly! And grab yourself a tube map; this is an essential item for travelling on the LU.
