Italian palazzo-fronted and with an interior of Art Deco splendour, this was one of the classiest additions to Old Compton Street on its 1930 debut.

Like much of surrounding Soho the Prince Edward has a wild and extravagant past; designed to offer the height of luxury to patrons with major musicals in mind, the Prince Edward struggled for a niche and ran into trouble with the authorities when temporary statues of four scantily-clad ladies outside were ordered to be removed - despite there being plenty more titillating sights around the sinful streets of Soho in the mid-1930s.

It became a cabaret restaurant with a revolving dancefloor in 1936 offering up entertainments like 'Ladies And Their Dogs' - where chic models would parade around the stage with matching hounds - and made a fortune, until the outbreak of WWII put paid to such frivolities.

The Queensbury All-Services Club made morale-boosting recordings here during the war with stars like Vera Lynn, Glenn Miller and Bing Crosby all doing their bit for the Blitz Spirit. And in the 50s Cinerama moved in, the Prince Edward's 64-foot screen ideal for the visual extravaganzas of this Hollywood period - in particular, Stanley Kubrick's hallucinogenic masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey ran for over a year.

It took until 1978 for the Prince Edward to find a musical glamorous enough for its surroundings: Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Evita was that show, setting up shop for eight years and making a star out of Elaine Paige.

The Prince Edward never looked back, and the likes of Martin Guerre, Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins and Crazy For You all succeeded in style here: the current phenomenon is Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that West End audiences just adore.
