Comment about hotels in the WC1 area of London The WC1 postal area of London is an area to the west of the City of London ( the financial area ) and is centred on Russell Square in the West End. Kings Cross Station and Euston Station border it to the north and Tottenham Court Road and Chancery Lane to the south. Major landmarks in this area include the British Museum located just south of Russell Square, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the University of London. The area has contrasting lifestyles with the north part around Kings Cross and Euston being the poorest in terms of lifestyle and the area south of Russell Square, known as Bloomsbury, being a more upmarket mixture of commercial properties and good hotels. Tottenham Court Road is a shopping street featuring many discount electrical stores.
Travel is easy by underground as there are many underground stations within easy reach. By foot the areas of Soho, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Theatreland and Oxford Street are easily accessible.
QUESTION: Why should I choose a hotel in WC1 In our opinion, generally speaking, WC1 is an area of contrasting hotel accommodation ( see map at top of page ). The north around Kings Cross did have a very bad reputation but is now being cleaned up, however we do not recommend this part of WC1 to single females or children as nightime still brings out the undesirables. Russell Square and the area south and west ( postcode WC1B, Bloomsbury ) is very acceptable as a tourist area and one we recommend as its more safe and offers easy walking access to many areas of shops, attractions and restaurants. Hotels in the south of this area are 3 to 5 star and are slightly more expensive than the rival tourist area of Kensington. Hotels around the north of the area at Kings Cross tend to be budget with a couple of exceptions and you should check out the distance to the underground in this area as some hotels can be up to half a mile from a station.
