Why should I choose a West End hotel?
In our opinion, generally speaking, the West End is good for weekend shoppers and theatre goers but can be a little stressful for longer stays with continuous noise and crowds. Also the hotel prices tend to be higher than areas bordering the West End such as Bayswater and Kensington. Try to use a high rise hotel to bring you out of the noise and air pollution.
If this area is not for you then look at Kensington to the south-west of the West End for alternative London hotels.
Getting Around
Getting around the West End is very easy; most hotels have a complimentary street guide of the West End. Walking is the best method as you will see much more of what you have come to London for; on the way from one place to another. The West End is fairly spread out, but once you have bought a daily or weekly travel pass, hopping the buses or a tube is always an option. China Town is great for food and remedies in the many restaurants, shops and supermarkets that trade in everything that is Eastern and mystical. Acupuncture and massage is also plentiful in this special place in London. Theatres are numerous and have the most magical, entertaining and foot stomping shows in the world, American A-listers dream of treading the boards in London, it is considered by some as better than Broadway. Shopping can be good too with bargains, and unique designer shops everywhere.
West End Hotels
The West End hotels are where everyone wants to be located; for obvious reasons. They tend to be the plushest and most expensive, but hey! Isn't every city centre the same? London is slightly different in the bargain department in this case, and Hotel-Assist is the best way to find that special deal which will often allow you to stay central, for much less than most people pay.
Shopping
Spoilt for choice doesn't even come near to describing this part of every stay in London. Regent Street, Oxford Street, Carnaby Street, Soho, Covent Garden and Shaftesbury Avenue where theatre land starts, are the main streets and areas. If you are here for about a month, you may get to see every shop in these streets. Here is a big tip; walk down the side streets off these main ones, and you will find an amazing number of exclusive shops with price labels that will make you, and your other half smile a lot. All these shopping streets and areas are within a short bus hop or walking distance of Piccadilly, so make Piccadilly Circus your base camp and you will find it very easy to plan your day out.
Dining Out, Brunch, Lunch, Dinner and more
No matter where in the world you are from, or what your taste buds desire, Londons` West End has a restaurant, cafe, bistro or fast food outlet to satisfy them. Every street has eateries of many disciplines, vegetarian, pub grub, fast food, traditional English fare, steak houses, fish restaurants and cultural food eateries. Areas like the Bohemian Covent Garden and Soho have shops and eateries often with entertainment thrown in. Whether that is the locals exhibiting their quaint and artistic flair and ways, or the famous street entertainers who must pass an audition before they are licensed, is always a bone of contention in Soho. On a hot summers day there is no better sport than sitting in a Covent Garden cafe which consists of a kitchen and bar in a building, and the main seating outside under a marquee. In Soho you can sit outside Zillis cafe or the many pubs and watch the world go by; its just pure bliss. There is always somewhere nearby that you can rest up; in between `bashing the plastic`.
Health and Leisure
Bannatyne Health clubs are owned by one of the famous Dragons from BBC 2`s `The Dragons Den`, so you will be well looked after. Pampering is another non-cruel sport that London just excels in, and you will be spoilt rotten if you spend an afternoon or a day at the Sanctuary Spa in Covent Garden. Many of the London hotels also have their own in-house spas, gyms and salons to make you feel extra special and ready to take on London again. For those of you who don't want to spend hours in a health club, then in China Town you can get a relaxing head or body massage in the many little shops in this fantastic village.
Night Life
Welcome to the Pleasure Dome that is the West End of London. Late night pubs with music of your choice, comedy clubs, live music venues, restaurants with entertainment, theatres, cinemas, lap dancing, gay clubs and pubs and sporting venues are all within the district of Westminster which Londoners call `Up West`. Theatre tickets can be bought at a discount in many outlets in Leicester Square, but look at the position of your seats first as you don`t want to be behind a pillar. After the theatre you must go to Sarastro`s restaurant in Drury Lane Covent Garden, it is billed as the show after the show. Book up early as it is quite popular and as much fun as the theatre itself. Soho by night is an area that transforms itself into a village for the gay community, but it also hosts a few good revue bars and shows where straights can also be catered for by adult entertainment and lap dancing clubs.
Places of Interest
Trafalgar Square is a great point of interest and a recognisable landmark. In the old days they used to have a monument in nearby Covent Garden called The Seven Dials, as there were always seven roads leading into the square. Up until 1840 it was known as Hungerford Square and used for dishing out public punishments. Today it still has 7 roads leading off it. The Mall will take you to St James` Palace and Buckingham Palace, Whitehall will take you to The Banqueting House, Horseguards Parade, No. 10 Downing Street and Parliament Square with Westminster Abbey, Parliament and Big Ben. Lower Regent Street will take you to Piccadilly Circus, Regent Street, Leicester Square and Shaftesbury Avenue (theatre land). In Duncannon Street you will find St Martins-in-the-field church where in the summer they have concerts, at the end of the street you will find Charring Cross railway station and tube. To the left is a road called John Adam Street which will take you down to the river and Charing Cross pier, from there you can cruise the Thames, or eat, dine and dance the day or night away on the many ships that are now floating clubs and restaurants.
