Wimbledon Fortnight is when tennis-mania grips the country. Book a London hotel early to ensure you don't miss it. The 2010 Wimbledon Championships will be held from the 21st June to the 4th July in whats known as Wimbledon Fortnight. Wimbledon is the worlds most prestigious and highly-regarded Grand Slam event in the tennis calendar. London hotels will fill up fast.

During Wimbledon Fortnight the whole country goes tennis mad and it has become as much a part of the British Summer as grumbling about the weather. Not that the famous Centre Court has to worry with it's new all-weather state-of-the-art retractable roof.

The world's greatest players compete over the two weeks for the men's singles, women's singles, men's/ women's doubles and mixed doubles titles. There are also junior events that run in parallel for the future stars of tennis.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club has hosted the Wimbledon Championships for more than 125 years. Over the years Centre Court has played host to the most entertaining and top-class tennis played between legendary players. The atmosphere is electric and spills-out into the surrounding courts and onto the famous Henman Hill where the matches are broadcast on a giant screen to the crowds of eager fans.

Hotels near to Wimbledon Tennis All England Club are quite scarce and tend to be mega expensive during the Wimbledon Fortnight. Our advice is to look at Kensington (15 mins) or Earls Court (15 mins) both of which are direct no change options on the underground on the District Line.

Tickets and times

In 2010, Wimbledon Fortnight is 21st June to 4th July. Play starts at 1pm on Centre and No. 1 Courts for the first 11 days and at 2pm on finals days. On all other courts play starts at midday in the first week and 11am in the second (and for junior matches).

Wimbledon Tickets are highly sought after - especially for the major games on the feature courts. The majority of Centre, No.1 and No.2 Court tickets are sold in advance via a public ballot. But Wimbledon is one of few major UK sporting events where premium tickets are available on the day of play.

Approximately 500 tickets can be bought at the turnstiles for each of the Centre (except for the last 4 days), No.1 and No.2 Courts.

About 6000 Ground Admission tickets are available each day. For the popular matches it pays to queue early. Overnight queuing for Centre or No. 1 court tickets has become a Wimbledon tradition but for other matches it pays to book a cheap London hotel within easy reach.

Ticket prices range from £25 to over £100 depending on the day and the court (obviously with finals day on Centre Court being most expensive and hardest to get).

Getting to Wimbledon

Wimbledon is in South West London. West Bound District Line trains terminating at Wimbledon run every 4 minutes from Earls Court. You can also get off at Southfields Station for a connecting shuttle bus or a 15 minute walk.

Regular trains to Wimbledon mainline station run from London Waterloo (central to some of London's cheapest hotels) and there is a shuttle bus service direct to the grounds every five minutes.

There are also direct buses to the Championships every 30 minutes from Marble Arch and Victoria.
