Houndsditch EC3 is situated in the north of the Square Mile within London's financial district, between Bishopsgate EC3 at its northern end and St Botolph Street EC3 and Aldgate EC3 at its southern point. Houndsditch was formerly the location of the moat that surrounded London Wall. The name is thought to be derived from either the dead dogs that were thrown into the moat, or from the nearby City Kennels, where dogs were kept for hunts within the City of London.

Houndsditch is located alongside Camomile Street EC3 and Bevis Marks EC3 and is busy Monday to Friday. This lively area is home to a number of bars and restaurants, including the renowned Dukes of Houndsditch. This bar and restaurant serves a variety of Italian food, which can be enjoyed on the terrace here in the summer months. Dukes of Houndsditch, situated at 18-22 Houndsditch EC3 is open till late Monday to Friday and provides evening entertainment. The impressive 39 Houndsditch office complex is located on the south side of Houndsditch. This fully refurbished office is available for hire and offers a grand entrance hall, gallery kitchens and a modern interior.

Houndsditch is 150m from the Swiss Re (Gherkin) building, which stands at 30 St Mary Axe. The 40 story Swiss Re tower was designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners and was created using recycled materials whenever possible. This 178.8m high structure, officially opened in May 2004, dominates the London skyline. Other landmarks close to Houndsditch include Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, 250m away at 25 Old Broad Street EC3. The distinctive Lloyds Building is 300m south of Houndsditch on Leadenhall Street EC3. The Lloyds Tower, which is next to the historic Leadenhall Market, can be reached via St Mary Axe.

Houndsditch leads into Bishopsgate EC3 at its northern end, towards Liverpool Street Station. There are a number of places of interest along Bishopsgate, including the Bishopsgate Institute. The institute, run by the Bishopsgate Foundation, provides a wide range of courses for the general public and is located at 230 Bishopsgate EC3. The St Ethelburga's and St Helen's Bishopsgate churches are also located along this busy road. The Orangery, located 50m north of Houndsditch near Cutlers Gardens at 10 Devonshire Square EC2, provides an excellent place to eat in the Bishopsgate area, with outdoor seating in summer months.

Houndsditch is 450m from Bank Underground station, which can be reached via Bishopsgate and Threadneedle Street EC3. Here visitors can see the historic Bank of England building and visit the Bank of England Museum. The grand Manson House building, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, is also located here, close to the Royal Exchange, home to designer jewellers De Beers and Tiffany & Co.

Houndsditch is close to many London Underground and mainline stations, its nearest being Liverpool Street, 100m north. Fenchurch Street mainline station is 350m south of Houndsditch, while Moorgate is 600m west via London Wall EC3. Tower Hill Underground Station is 400 south of Houndsditch, via the Minories. Tower Hill is linked to the Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station, from where passengers can reach a number of destinations, including Canary Wharf and London City Airport.
