LONDON EC3 INDEX
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) network runs computerised and driverless trains through the heart of the London EC3 area, from various destinations across east and south London, including Cutty Sark and Island Gardens. The DLR, which opened in 1987, now has 38 stations and carries over 55 million passengers annually. The elevated track on much of the DLR provides excellent views of the river Thames and the City of London's landmarks, including Canary Wharf. The DLR, which runs from 05.30am–00.30am Monday to Saturday and between 07.00am-23.30pm on Sundays, is popular with both City workers and tourist passengers.
London Underground Oyster and travelcards can be used on the DLR, which is free for under 5's and offers a discount of 10% for groups of 10 or more. Another great payment option for travellers interested in discovering the London EC3 area and attractions along the Thames, is the Rail and River Rover ticket. This one day pass provides unlimited DLR travel and free access to boat trips, on City Cruises river boats. Travellers can reach Tower Millennium Pier, which is located in London EC3, close to the Tower of London, from various points along the Thames such as Greenwich and Westminster. Tower Millennium Pier is close to many places of interest including the All Hallows by the Tower church, located on Byward Street EC3 and Trinity Square EC3, home to Trinity House and the Green Flag award winning Trinity Square Gardens.
London City Airport is part of the DLR network, so travellers can reach Tower Gateway DLR station and Bank from here. The ExCel centre is located next to Custom House DLR station in east London. Tower Gateway Station is 50m east of Tower Hill Underground Station, which provides Circle and District line services to many destinations within the City of London, such as Liverpool Street mainline and London Underground Station and Aldgate, which is located in the east of the City's financial district, on Aldgate High Street EC3. Stratford, Greenwich and Lewisham DLR stations are all connected to mainline railway stations.
Canary Wharf, one of the busiest stations of the DLR, is 5 stops to Bank Underground Station, on the Central, Circle, District, Northern and Waterloo & City lines. Visitors will find the Bank of England building here, as well as the impressive Mansion House, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London. The Royal Exchange, which is famous for housing designer jewellers such as De Beers and Tiffany & Co. is 50m east of Bank Station, between Cornhill EC3 and Threadneedle Street EC3. Monument Station, which is linked to Bank, is 50m from the Monument, the Sir Christopher Wren designed column created to mark the Great Fire of London, which started on nearby Pudding Lane EC3. The Monument, which is positioned on Fish Street Hill EC3 and Monument Street EC3, has a 41m high viewing platform that provides amazing views across London, of landmarks such as Tower 42, Lloyd's of London building and the Swiss Re tower, which opened in 2004.
