ABOUT THE LONDON PALLADIUM

London's West End is home to some of the worlds most famous theatres, and the London Palladium on Argyll Street is most definitely near to the top of the list. The theatre was built on the original site of Hengler´s Circus and has been a place of superb, first class entertainment since its doors opened 1910. Originally named The Palladium, it became the household name the London Palladium in 1934.

Boasting 2,286 seats, the London Palladium is most fondly remembered from the 50´s and 60´s as the home of Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Millions of people were treated to this weekly televised variety show hosted by Tommy Trinder and later by the BAFTA award winning veteran entertainer, Bruce Forsyth, AKA ´Brucie´. The next televised variety show to work the stage from the 1980´s was Live from the Palladium hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck, who was also a host of the Sunday night show from 1965.

Built by Frank Matcham, also the designer of the London Collesium, the London Palladium was bought from the Stall Moss Theatres Group in 2000 by Andrew Lloyd Webber´s Really Useful Group. After the Andrew Lloyd Webber take over, The King & I starring Elaine Paige was revived and a series of successful outstanding theatrical performances have followed suit. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang ran from 2002 to September 2005 and the Christmas production for 2005-06 saw the delights of Tommy Steele return to the stage, after performing years earlier in Singin´ in the Rain, as the star of Scrooge - The Musical.

This theatre has also hosted some fabulous concerts including the famous Judy Garland / Liza Minnelli concert in the 60´s and other stars that have headlined include Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Liberace. In 1931, a group of comedians who became known as the Crazy Gang took to the stage until October 1939.

The world renowned Royal Variety Performance is also regularly hosted at the London Palladium. This annual televised gala evening is a very entertaining spectacle including a variety of acts performed before Royalty raising money for the Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund.

Due to the design of the auditorium, some of the seats are of ´restricted viewing´ so be sure to check thoroughly before purchasing your ticket. The theatre is wheelchair friendly, aisle seats have the most leg room and there are three licensed bars in which to enjoy pre-show, interval and post-show drinks.

Oxford Circus underground station is the closest to the theatre which runs on the Central, Bakerloo and Victoria lines. The most exciting event starting in February 2006 is the musical production ´Sinatra at the London Palladium´. Ol´ Blue Eyes is back featuring a live band and big screen projectors with super talented dancers and singers performing Frank Sinatra's classics. And if you think the London Palladium is a treat just to look at from the outside, rest assured the inside is even better.
