LONDON WEST END

LONDON WEST END London W1

The London W1 postal district, commonly known as the West End, is a large area that incorporates the areas of Marylebone, Mayfair, Soho and Fitzrovia, the latter of which is situated close to Bloomsbury. The large public green spaces of Green Park, Hyde Park and Regent's Park surround sections of the London West End area, which also includes much of London's West End and Theatreland. The northern section of the West End area leads up to Marylebone Road and Edgware Road, while the southern border runs along Piccadilly and Shaftesbury Avenue towards Tottenham Court Road and borders Covent Garden. Tottenham Court Road, which forms the western side of Bloomsbury, makes up the eastern side of London W1, with Edgware Road and Park Lane forming its west side. Oxford Street runs through the heart of the London W1 area and here there are some world famous places to stay such as the Selfridge Hotel and the Langham Hotel London. Having a full refurbishment in 2005, the superb Cumberland Hotel offers a great location off Oxford Street just north of Mayfair.

Marylebone forms the north western section of the West End, with major streets such as Baker Street, Gloucester Place and the village like Marylebone High Street running through it. Marylebone is home to a number of historical buildings and places of interest, such as the Wallace Collection, a vast collection of work from artists including Rembrandt and Rubens, located in Hertford House on Manchester Square. Other notable buildings in Marylebone include Wigmore Hall, a classical music venue, which stands on Wigmore Street and BBC Broadcasting House, located on Portland Place, close to the luxurious Langham Hotel London, which stands on Langham Place.

London tour bus

Fitzrovia, which makes up the north eastern end of the West End, is located close to Bloomsbury, home to the University College London (UCL) and the British Museum, one of London's most popular attractions. The 175m BT Tower, a listed building since 2003, stands in the Fitzrovia area at 60 Cleveland Street. The Pollocks Toy Museum is located nearby at 1 Scala Street W1, while the Middlesex Hospital also stands here, on Mortimer Street and Riding House Street, close to Goodge Street. Hotels in this area around the British Museum include the Imperial Hotels, a collection of tourist class accommodations. Alternatively, just off Tottenham Court Road is the St. Giles hotel London, a value for money no frills tourist class hotel in agreat location for accessing London attractions.

West End Manchester square

Soho lies in the south-east of the West End, close to the thriving Leicester Square in WC2 and the Trocadero entertainment complex, located on Coventry Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. The popular shopping areas of Oxford Street and Regent Street, which meet at Oxford Circus, lie within easy reach of Soho, which is close to Chinatown and many West End theatres, including the London Palladium on Argyll Street.

West End

Mayfair makes up the south western section of the West End London W1 area, bordered by Park Lane, which runs parallel to Hyde Park and Piccadilly, home to the Hard Rock Cafe and the Royal Academy of Arts, which stands next to the Burlington Arcade. Places of interest within the Mayfair area include Grosvenor Square, home of the Roosevelt Memorial and the U.S Embassy. The exclusive Dorchester is located within Mayfair, which is within easy reach of Marble Arch and New Bond Street. Within 100m of Grosvenor Square is another 5 star hotel, Claridges. At the southern end of Mayfair is the Park Lane Mews, a 4 star hotel offering reasonable prices. If you are looking for an intimate 5 star hotel then consider Browns Hotel which was fully renovated in 2005.

London Oxford Street

The London West End area is well served by bus, taxis, National Rail and London Underground services. Marble Arch and Bond Street Underground stations serve both the Marylebone and Mayfair areas of west London, while Piccadilly Circus and Tottenham Court Road are within easy reach of Soho. Goodge Street and Great Portland Street Underground stations provide services in the Fitzrovia area, while Marylebone is close to both Oxford Circus and Baker Street stations. Marylebone Station, which provides both London Underground and National Rail services, stands 150m north of Marylebone Road, while Paddington Station, home of the Heathrow Express service, is located 800m west of Edgware Road.
