Lothbury EC2, home to the Bank of England building, is situated between Gresham Street EC2 at its western end and Throgmorton Street EC2 at its eastern point. Lothbury, which is located in the heart of the financial district of the City of London, has junctions with major streets within the EC2 area including Coleman Street EC2, Moorgate EC2, Old Jewry EC2 and Princes Street EC2. This area was heavily populated with coppersmiths in the Middle Ages before becoming home to a number of merchants and bankers that worked in this area.
The Bank of England, known as the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, stands on the southern side of Lothbury and is also surrounded by Bartholomew Lane EC2, Princes Street EC2 and Threadneedle Street EC2. The Bank of England has been reconstructed several times and some of the work completed here in 1788 by Sir John Sloane can be seen today, although much of this distinctive building was built in the 1920's. The Bank of England Museum, which has an entrance on Bartholomew Lane, is open from 10.00am – 17.00pm Monday to Friday. The museum provides a great insight into the history of the Bank of England and features a restored banking hall, gold bars and interesting weapons which were used to defend the bank.
Lothbury is 200m north of the Royal Exchange, which can be reached via Bartholomew Lane. Positioned between Threadneedle Street EC2 and Cornhill EC3, the Royal Exchange houses exclusive fashion boutiques and fine restaurants, in a elegant historic building and surrounding courtyard. The Grand Cafe & Bar is located in the courtyard of the Royal Exchange and provides fine seafood and seasonal cuisine, while it's mezzanine bars offer fine wines and champagne, in addition to an extensive cocktail menu. The Grand Cafe and Bar is open from 08.00am Monday to Friday for coffee, till 23.00pm for lunches and evening dining. Shops within the Royal Exchange include Montblanc, Smokers Paradise and Watches of Switzerland.
Lothbury is home to the 41 Lothbury office building, a stunning work of architecture located next to the Bank of England. Managed by the Palladia Group, 41 Lothbury is a Grade II listed property that has undergone extensive restoration, with interior columns, marble walls and an original checkerboard marble floor, all centered around an atrium, designed to allow maximum light into the building. Other places of interest on Lothbury include St Margaret's Church, a site of worship since the 12th century, which is open between 07.00am – 18.00pm Monday to Friday.
Lothbury is close to a number of rail and London Underground stations, such as Bank, which is located 200m south and can be reached via Princes Street. In addition to extensive tube services, Bank Station also runs Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains to destinations including Canary Wharf, London City Airport and Tower Gateway, for Fenchurch Street mainline station. Liverpool Street Station, which provides London Underground, National Rail and the Stansted Express service, can be found 600m north-east of Lothbury.
