Lower Thames Street EC3 runs from London Bridge on King William Street at its eastern end, through to Tower Hill EC3 at its western point. This busy street, close to the River Thames, is home to a number of monumental buildings including Old Billingsgate Market. This historical fish market, situated at 1 Old Billingsgate Walk, Thames Street EC3, is now a major events and conference venue and often stages concerts and industry parties. The grand Custom House building, which stands next to Old Billingsgate Market, is an impressive sight and visitors can also enjoy a walk along the River Thames via Custom House Walk EC3, towards the Tower of London.
While the Tower of London is the most predominant feature in this area, Lower Thames Street is also in close proximity of number of significant buildings within the City of London, such as Plantation Place. Completed in 2004, this huge office complex, at 31-33 Fenchurch Street EC3, consists of two buildings with over one million square feet of space. One building faces out onto Fenchurch Street while the other has views of Eastcheap EC3, Mincing Lane EC3 and Rood Lane EC3. Plantation Place has beautifully landscaped roof gardens that offer amazing views across London. The London Underwriting Centre is another interesting place close to Lower Thames Street, located on Great Tower Street and Mincing Lane EC3. The London Underwriting Centre, which is home to a number of insurance companies, has excellent event facilities. The London Underwriting Centre has a free standing escalator in place and visitors can experience excellent panoramic views of London from the top floor. The London Underwriting Centre is located in Minster Court. This three building complex was designed in the late 1980's by GMW Partnership and became home to a variety of companies. There are a number of restaurants and bars located here, such as Balls Brothers and the lively Bar Med. Minster Court was used as Cruella De Villes' castle in the Disney film 101 Dalmatians.
Lower Thames Street leads into Byward Street EC3, home of the award winning Trinity Square Gardens. Gracechurch Street EC3, which leads into Bishopsgate EC2, is easily reached from Lower Thames Street. From here visitors will be able to see the huge Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, the Lloyds Building and the unique Swiss Re, often referred to as the Gherkin.
Tower Hill Underground Station, on the Circle and District lines and linked to the Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway Station (DLR) is located 300m to the east of Lower Thames Street, close to the Minories. Other nearby stations include Monument at the western end of Lower Thames Street. This station is linked to Bank Underground, which runs Central, Circle, District, Northern, Waterloo & City line and DLR services. Cannon Street underground and mainline station is 200m to the west of Lower Thames Street. Tower Millennium Pier is located 250m from Lower Thames Street, close to Sugar Quay and Three Quays. This is the alighting point for the Thames Clipper river shuttle boat service, which stops at various places of interest along the River Thames. Commuters use the service to reach destinations such as Canary Wharf, while travellers can reach St Katherine Docks and The Tower of London via this popular service.
