The Minories EC3 is a major road that stretches from Tower Hill at its southern end and leads to Aldgate EC3 at is northern point. The name Minories is derived from the Abbey of the Minoresses of St Mary, of the Order of St Clare, which stood on this site for many years after it was formed in 1294. 'Minoress' was the title given to the nuns that lived here. The Minories later became used as an armoury and today is the home of many insurance companies and financial offices. The London Metropolitan University has two of its city campuses located here, at 41 and 100 Minories EC3.
The Minories are in close proximity to Trinity Square, former headquarters of the Port of London Authority. Trinity Square is surrounded by impressive Edwardian buildings, designed by architect Sir Edwin Cooper and is home to the Green Flag award winning Trinity Square Gardens. One of the major places of interest close to the Minories is The Tower of London, located on Tower Hill. The Minories are also just 200m from St Katherine Docks, located along St Katherine's Way EC3. This is a great place to explore with many interesting places to eat and drink, such as the Medieval Banquet, which is located at Ivory House, St Katherine's Dock E1. Visitors will experience traditional entertainment, jousting competitions and much more in this unusual eating establishment. There are many places to eat and drink along the Minories and in the surrounding area. This includes the excellent Chez Gerard Trinity Square, located 50m from Tower Hill Underground Station at 14 Trinity Square EC3. Here diners can enjoy a varied seasonal menu of fine French food. Open seven days a week, Chez Gerard offers an a la carte or set menu. The India Raj, situated at 105a The Minories, close to Tower Hill, provides mouth watering dishes for lunch and dinner. This popular restaurant is open Monday to Friday.
The Minories are 400m from Bishopsgate, via either Houndsditch or Leadenhall Street EC3. This is home to the distinctive Lloyd's of London building, as well as the exclusive Leadenhall Market, located on Lime Street EC3. This market is full of traditional shops and stalls selling a variety of fine food and wine. Other landmarks close to the Minories include the stunning Swiss Re building, 300m away at 30 St Mary Axe. Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, is 400m from the Minories on Old Broad Street EC3. Old Broad Street leads to Liverpool Street Station.
The Minories are close to Aldgate Underground Station, situated on Aldgate High Street. This station is on the Circle and Metropolitan lines. Fenchurch Street railway station is can be reached from the mid point of the Minories, along Crosswall EC3. Tower Hill Underground Station, which runs Circle and District line services, is 100m from the Minories and close to Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway Station (DLR). This is the former site of the Minories Railway Station, which opened in 1840.
