LONDON EC3 INDEX
The Monument is a landmark with important historical significance, situated between Monument Street and Fish Street Hill EC3, close to Pudding Lane EC3. The Monument was built between 1671 – 1677 using Portland stone to commemorate the Great Fire of London. The Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and his associate Robert Hook, who created a number of designs before the Doric column structure was chosen. This landmark was the highest single stone column at the time of its creation and remains a dominant feature within the City of London visited by thousands of people every year. There is a flaming copper urn at the top of the Monument, which symbolises the Great Fire of London. This important feature of the Monument was re-gilded in 1954 at the same time the Monument was steam cleaned to restore it after the Second World War. The Monument contains Latin inscriptions that refer to the Great Fire of London and it also carries the names of all the Mayors of the City of London that were in office during its creation. One of the greatest features of this impressive structure is the amazing views it provides of the London skyline and structures such as Tower 42, Swiss Re building and the Lloyds of London Building. There are 311 steps to the viewing platform here, which is 41 metres from the ground. The platform was completely enclosed in 1842 for the safety of visitors. Visitors that climb the internal spiral staircase receive a certificate to show they have climbed the Monument. The Monument is 62 metres high, which is said to be the same distance that this landmark stands from the site of the former Farriner’s Bakery in nearby Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire of London started.
The Monument underground station is situated within close proximity of this landmark and is connected to Bank Underground. The Circle, Central, District, Northern and Waterloo & City lines and the DLR all stop at this location. There are a number of major bus routes that serve this area including the number 17, which stops at various landmarks including the Monument and London Bridge. Sightseeing bus services are also available from various points in Central London and provide a great way for travellers to view a number of popular attractions within the City. This can be an enjoyable method of getting around and gaining an insight into the history of the City of London. Visitors can also reach the Monument via the River Thames clipper boat service, which stops at a number of major tourist sites across the river, including the Tower of London, Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre. Travellers should take this boat service to London Bridge City Pier to reach the Monument, which is a short distance from this location. This river boat shuttle service also travels to Docklands and Greenwich from London Bridge.
