LONDON EC3 INDEX

Monument Street EC3 is located close to the River Thames, within the Square Mile of the City of London. Monument Street is named after the famous column built here to commemorate the Great Fire of London, which started in nearby Pudding Lane EC3. Monument Street was formed between 1883-1893 and extended to include Monument Square, which was situated in this area. Monument Street links King William Street with Fish Street Hill EC3 and also has junctions with Botolph Lane EC3 and Lower Thames Street.

The Monument is positioned at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill. The Monument is 62m high, which is also the distance it stands from Pudding Lane, where the Great Fire of London began in 1666. The Monument was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and created between 1671-1677. Visitors can climb the 311 steps to the viewing platform here, which at 41m high provides amazing views across London, of landmarks including St Pauls Cathedral, Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower and of the impressive Swiss Re building, often referred to as the Gherkin, which opened in 2004.

Monument Street is just 50m from the southern end of Gracechurch Street, home of the historic St Clement Church. There are a number of streets that interconnect with Gracechurch Street, a major highway within the City of London. Cornhill EC3 and Lombard Street EC3 connect Gracechurch Street with Bank in a western direction. From here visitors will be able to see many of the landmarks within the City's financial district, including the Bank of England building, Royal Exchange and the extravagant Mansion House, official residence of the Lord Mayor of London. Fenchurch Street EC3 and Leadenhall Street stretch east of Gracechurch Street towards Aldgate High Street and the Minories, close to the Tower of London. Leadenhall Street is home to the controversial Lloyd's of London building, which is close to Leadenhall Market, on Lime Street EC3. Leadenhall Market sells fine meat, fish and quality wines, under an elegant painted glass and iron roof.

Monument Street is 200m from the River Thames and London Bridge, which is located on King William Street. Other places of interest south of Monument Street include Old Billingsgate Market, a former fish market that is now a major events venue, located on Lower Thames Street EC3. Custom House is also positioned on Lower Thames Street, 150m from Monument Street. Visitors can walk along the Thames here via Custom House Walk EC3 or Sugar Quay Walk EC3, close to Tower Millennium Pier, a pick up point of the Thames Clipper boat service, which stops at a number of attractions along the Thames, including the Tate Modern and the Saachi Gallery.

Monument Street is close to a number of mainline and London Underground stations, including Cannon Street (200m west) Monument, which is linked to Bank Underground (50m) and Fenchurch Street Mainline Station (500m east). Tower Hill Underground Station is 500m from Monument Street and is linked to Tower Gateway Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station. Tower Gateway provides a number of services to various destinations across London , including Greenwich, London City Airport and Stratford.
