Tuned away at the Queens Hotel Leeds

I was turned away at the Queens Hotel in Leeds 13/02/10
Let me tell you about the way our booking went at the well renowned ‘Queens Hotel’ in Leeds 13/02/10, the booking was made 5 days prior to arrival through Laterooms.com;

We arrived at just after 2p.m. to be told we had been upgraded to a deluxe twin room (an instant admission of guilt) usually this would be appreciated but when you’ve specifically booked a double room because you have your wife with you it’s not good at all!

The attitude of the staff was one of rehearsed rhetoric hidden behind false smiles and a pretence of offering help and understanding whilst doing absolutely nothing except repeat over and over their room deficiency that night and almost suggest that we had done something wrong by booking through Laterooms!

The bottom line was we weren’t going to get a double room no matter what so the only other option was to take a refund of which I eventually received three days later.

We then spent the next one and a half hours searching for a hotel that could accommodate us on a very busy Valentine’s Saturday, we ended up twenty five minutes walk away from our original well placed first choice of the Queens Hotel, this time should have been spent having a leisurely shop and light meal before getting ready for the evening function that we were there to attend.

Because we were now well out of the city centre we had no option but to bring taxi’s into the equation… and we all know how they can spoil your night out!

We might have booked through Laterooms but it was booked five days prior and it wasn’t exactly at bargain price!

Why couldn’t somebody from Laterooms or the Queens attempt to contact us if there was a problem with the booking? At least we could have booked somewhere else at that point, it’s absolutely disgusting and belittling to expect us to turn up and just simply be pacified by the offer of a superior quality twin room that we had at no point requested!

The whole episode is unforgivable and certainly kicked our weekend off to the worst start imaginable… it’s disgraceful!

So far I’ve received no apology from the Queens although Laterooms did email me to lay the blame firmly with the Queens and not themselves as per all their small print blah bla blah blah!

Hotels should be held be responsible and fined heavily for this sort of thing, it’s not the first time and won’t be the last time it happens because nobody does anything about it!
Regards

London hotels reaped (or shall we say robbed the guest) the benefits of London popularity for the last 10 years. Now things are changing.

Go back just ten years. London was “top of the pops” for visiting. London hotels were bursting at the seams with American tourists staying a week or more before moving on to Paris for another week. The hotels loved them because they spent a small fortune buying whisky in the hotel bar at inflated prices and made lots of overseas telephone calls from their room. Consequently, the hotel scene mushroomed.
Its a very different story now. The slide effectively started as we all know with 911, then we had foot and mouth, then mad cow disease, then terrorist attacks in London and several financial hiccups to boot!
We have checked and just before 911 we were selling 4 star hotels at 99 pounds double occupancy, this inflated to an average of over 150 pounds over the following years and now would you believe, you can book a 4 star hotel for 99 pounds!
It has long been claimed by overseas tourists that London was too expensive and I would agree with that. Its ok offering a 4 star at 150 to 200 pounds if its value for money, however some “so called” 3 and 4 star hotels rocked the boat and gave London a bad reputation which has stuck.
There is no regulatory organisation which officially classifies hotels standards therefore allowing London hotels to self classify. This means that you can have a perfectly nice 3 star hotel that installs flat screen televisions then gets in a professional photographer, contracts a great looking website and instantly upgrades itself to a 4 star. This is great for sales but bad from a satisfaction factor when the client arrives and sees his room.
Another inflationary factor was the popular practice of overseas investors buying a London hotel simply to hold for a few years and cash in the the property value increase. They did not want to invest in the hotel fixtures and fittings as that would reduce the bottom line profit so the quality declined but the room price increased based on historical reputaion and a swish website.
Now with the global downturn, London hotels which blossomed up all over the place are suffering. Joe public is watching the pennies and luxury items like a weekend in London at the theatre or shopping have been cut from the budget.
Hotels which are usually very busy at this time of the year (boosted by European Chrismas shoppers) are unusually quiet. Yes the last two or three saturday nights have been a bonanza but a hotel is open 7 days a week not just Saturday nights. Never the less we saw one “4 star” in Paddington selling last saturday at a greedy 288 pounds whilst Monday to Friday was 69 pounds. There is no doubt that some actually paid 288 pounds in order to get a room but are those people going to give that hotel a great review when what they got was a run of the mill fairly basis room.
So, where do we go from here?
In 2010, some hotels will go down, that is for sure. Others backed by profits made several years ago will continue to survive on less staff and less guest luxuries. The big chains with multiple 4 stars will downgrade prices to 3 star hotel rates. This will deprive the bread and butter backbone 3 star hotels of bookings. They will consequently cut their prices too.
A result for the consumer? Short term yes but mid term no because these hotels will stop refurbishing and over the next two years will also become “tired”. The property investors will have to hold the property because its lost value and they will also not refurbish.
But hey whats the problem, the Olympics is in 2 years and hotel prices will treble or more.
All in all the London hotel industry needs a shake up and a strong regulatory body to govern it.
The popularity of London as a destination is falling with overseas visitors and can not survive without the 4 star corporate stays and just the one night saturday night tourist.
London hotels became greedy, now they will pay the piper.

Robbed in a London minicab - be warned

A real taxi

We want to warn you about the dangers of taking an unlicenced taxi cab in London.

A licensed taxi is a car which has been designed for the purpose of carrying paying passengers. Services are usually regulated by the local government. A taxi can be found at a taxi rank or can be called while on the road by raising your hand towards the driver. In London a licensed taxi is known as a black cab (it is not always painted black). These taxis should be safe, and the drivers know London roads well.

We have spoken to someone who has experienced the danger of taking an unlicenced minicab and want to warn you.

Brian, a 30 year old City worker, was out on a rainy Saturday night in the West End and on leaving the bar decided to get a cab home. It was just after midnight and due to the rain, all the taxis passing were unavailable.
A car pulled up and the smiling driver told Brian he was a mini cab driver and he would take his fare. As this is a fairly common thing in London, Brian got in, told him where to drive and relaxed.
Next thing, the car took him to a quiet street, dragged Brian out of the cab, threatened him and pushed him towards a cash machine. Now Brian is a fitness enthusiast and can normally handle himself but the driver was a 6 foot plus heavily built black guy who looked very dangerous.

Brian was forcibly made to withdraw over 500 pounds fom two credit cards. The driver then hit him in the face and drove off.

The moral of this story is DO NOT USE UNLICENCED TAXIS IN LONDON.

A minicab driver is not allowed to pick up customers directly from the road: if you do travel in a minicab that has not been booked you will not be covered by the vehicles insurance, and you may be putting yourself at personal risk.

I visited the worst hotel ever at the weekend

“I visited the worst hotel ever at the weekend, it was so bad I just asked for my money back and drove 3 hours to get home as I would rather do that than stay there, resulting in me having to drive back to London to go to work the next day.

It was Peckham Lodge in London and it was absolutely awful. They led us down to a basement where our room was, the toilets and bathrooms (which were communal) were dirty, mouldy and had no locks on them. The floor was all coming up, electric sockets were hanging off the wall, there was dirty laundry and rubbish bags piled all over the place, there were holes in the wall, the communal kitchens (for people who stay longer than a night) were thick with dirt and the whole place stunk like it had gone off. It was dingy and horrible and I am sure it was a bail hostel as there were signs up like ‘no visitors after 11.30pm and all guests must report to reception by 10am for the register and No drink or other substances allowed in the hotel, etc. We felt totally unsafe.

We went to reception and asked for our money back only to be told that as we had already paid and a receipt had been issued they would not give us a refund. We totally kicked off and threatened them with the police, trading standards and environmental health. We told them we had photos and they would be closed down and after 20 mins of arguing till we were blue in the face (all the while a big beefy guard was stood near us trying to intimidate us) we finally won and they gave us our money back.

In my opinion it should be closed down as I would hate for anyone to have to stay in such a hovel!!!”

Complaint about the Regency Hotel London

“I visited London between 10-15th October. I could not find a place in my hotel which I stayed usually. So I reserved a place by using Expedia.com. Hotel was a four star hotel, “The Regency”.

I do not want to mention many other details such as the absence of mini bar in a four star hotel etc. But.. the air conditioning was not operating, and the vertical sliding window was stucking in half way!

So, I called reception and informed them. Few minutes later, a manager (probably the front ofice manager) came. After listening to me he said; why I wanted to use air conditioning while the weather was that nice! And why I was not happy with that much gap in the window!

There was not enough time and energy to change the hotel and I stayed there five days. I wanted to inform related people about this attitude. ”

Throughout the year, no matter what the British weather's doing, all sorts of people are booking into London hotels and unpacking unusually light suitcases. These are naturalists and they've come to enjoy relaxing times as nature intended.

In and around London there are plenty of opportunities to shed your clothes and enjoy the liberating world of naturism. Whether you fancy a relaxing day trip to one of the South-East’s nude-friendly beaches or some pampering at an elegant country house or even to shake your stuff at a nude nightclub… there’s something for everyone.
Now I don’t want you to think we’re talking about anything seedy. Naturists are regular people who enjoy the freedom that comes from escaping the shackles of clothing. After all, underneath every clothed person there’s someone nude! The main feature of naturism, apart from the obvious nudity, is the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Close to central London hotels, if you know where to look (a well-known problem with naturism!), you’ll find naturist spas where you can pamper yourself with massages, Jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms – perfect for some well-deserved and uninhibited relaxation. For something a little more energetic, not to mention daring, you can dance the night away at a clothes-free night club.
On the outskirts of London, but still within easy reach of cheap London hotels, there’s a little more space to explore the freedom that comes from stripping-off . A number of grand country houses offer naturists a secluded retreat amongst beautiful and spacious landscaped grounds. And there’s always a wide range of games and activities on offer, not to mention just lounging by the swimming pool.
And what if you’re a textile first-timer?
A ‘textile’ is a slightly derogatory, but also tongue-in-cheek, expression that naturists use to describe non-naturists. So how do you go about trying naturism? You can’t just strip off in the streets of London can you?! Well, there are plenty of British naturist clubs and venues that would be more than happy to welcome you to try it out.
If you’re a man then you might be worried that you might become, *ahem*, shall we say overwhelmed by the occasion? Trust me, even if you think the British weather isn’t enough to dampen your ardour, don’t worry – it really isn’t like that at all. These are friendly, relaxed and family-friendly environments.
What if you’re not some impossibly-perfect supermodel? Not to worry… no one will judge you, naturism is all about freedom and escaping from socially-enforced ideals. And the best news? The whole point is that you’ve got nothing to wear, so that’s one less worry!
So next time you’re booking a hotel in London and you see someone checking-in with little or no luggage…

St Pancras station has brought easy transport connections to Europe to the heart of London. The £800 million regeneration has made King’s Cross, a great place for cheap London hotels, a great choice for your stay in London.

Getting a cheap hotel in London near St Pancras makes great sense – but the new home of Eurostar makes King’s Cross a good choice for many more reasons.
With the move to St Pancras, the Eurostar really does put central London within easy reach of more than 100 destinations on the continent. Much more convenient from central London than either ferry or plane, the Eurostar travels at 186mph while still offering carbon-neutral travel (ten times less carbon emissions than low-cost airlines on equivalent journeys).
St Pancras International is the result of an £800 million restoration and extension of one of London’s landmark train stations. From the 90-metre champagne bar (Europe’s longest) to fine dining at the St Pancras Grand (designed by Martin Brudnizki of Scott’s and The Ivy fame), this is more than just a place to get on and off trains.
Fifty million people a year pass through the station, making it London’s busiest transport hub. Not only has it recently been voted the number one train station in the UK by the National Passenger Survey, it’s also London’s safest, having received the not-so-catchy ‘Europe’s Destination Station Recognised with Secure Station Award’.
The original station, built in 1868, was an impressive example of Victorian engineering and was the world’s largest enclosed space for many years. The new extension adds to this with a stunning glass roof consisting of 14,080 panels – enough to cover 38 tennis courts. The beautiful architecture has provided the backdrop to TV series and scenes in movies such as Harry Potter and Batman Begins.
The redevelopment is also rejuvenating the whole King’s Cross area, which is good news for an area where you can still find cheap hotels in London. This redevelopment has brought unrivalled travel links across the city, nationally, and of course to Europe, making King’s Cross a great base to explore London.
Local attractions also include the British Library, Shaw Theatre, Scala Cinema, Charles Dickens’ House, Foundling Museum, Renoir Cinema and Cockpit Arts which are all within walking distance of St Pancras.
For an ideal base in London try the Elmwood Hotel located in the relative peace of leafy Argyle Square. Just minutes from St Pancras and also Kings Cross Station and in the heart of the King’s Cross District, this cheap London Hotel offers comfort and convenience that’s hard to match.

Alright so times are lean, but London must still be enjoyed. And whilst it mightn’t be a good idea to sashay down Bond Street picking up exquisitely wrapped parcels at your whim, supping on a cocktail, dressed in your finest, will be a sure (and more purse-friendly) glamour fix. A string of wild (and often distinctly unglamourous) stories abound about the origins of this mixed drink. Whilst it’s hard to dispute that the USA created the first cocktail, the UK, and London, now makes some of the finest.

Best for Martinis…
…And James Bond fans. The Dukes Bar’s martinis have acquired worldwide fame. Ian Fleming was a regular, and it is likely that his equally famous, fictional secret agent discovered his taste for martinis here. Their simple classic (stirred though, not shaken) is hard to beat - with its perfect mix of Beefeater Gin, extra dry vermouth and lemon oil. Or make a companion of one of Bond’s leading ladies and choose from a Miss Moneypenny with a sharp kick of lime and passion fruit, or a sumptuous Ruby Windsor, all warmth and luxury with creme de cacao and cherry marnier. As you’re served at your table, and sink back into a blue velvet chair, wondering just what drink those in the portraits around you might have chosen, it’s sure to summon up in you the connoisseur of the finer things in life.

Best for a polynesian paradise
Mahiki’s two floored bar is festooned in faux-Hawaiiana, which extends to the grass-skirted bar staff. It crams in all things Tiki - including on to it’s drinks menu, where it’s tropical cocktails steal the show. Rum is their spirit of choice - and the bar takes it so seriously that they make their own - on Barbados - the oldest rum producing caribbean island. The music played is mostly tunes from the seventies and eighties and it’s crowd is as mixed as its cocktails, although if you happen to be caught in the grip of celebrity worship, you’ll find a steady supply to gawp at here - as regular and much-publicised patronage by junior members of the Royal Family testifies to.

Best for 1940s supper club style (and dancing)
The quietish pink neon of the Pigalle Club sign is a beacon in the no man’s land for decent bars that is Piccadilly Circus. As you sweep down the staircase inside you’ll step back in time to when clubs were beautiful, glamour was key, and night club singers were all smoky eyes and frothed-up silk. If you’re feeling flush make a night of it with supper, or just sit and sup cocktails as cabaret crooners, comedians and musicians do their jazz-fuelled thing. Atmosphere is everything here - classy yet sexy, stylish but not aloof, and huge fun. Tables are spread across two levels, but bag one near to the stage area if you can. Prices are steep - but they do factor in the live entertainment and once you’re there you’ll realise it’s a steal.

Best for pretending your drinking is all in the name of historical research
The Lonsdale’s exquisite cocktail menu traces the history of the London cocktail - spanning centuries and locations. The aim is simple - to showcase the best drinks that have originated in the UK and, in particular, London. As a thriving world city, London has seen numerous cultures settle within it - and with different cultures come different drinking styles. So, alongside your Cosmopolitans you’ll find drinks that have come to the city from all corners of the world, from authentic 16th century punches (Drake’s Mojito - 1586), to 18th century ‘Flips’, 1920s ‘Bucks’ - and back to the present day.

Best for Regency indulgence (and cigars)
Not as old as it might first appear, the sumptuous Library Bar at the Lanesborough is designed in the style of a Regency library. The bookcases are lined with leather bound books, and the crackling fire, subdued lighting, and deep leather wing chairs, enable you to sample their outstanding collection of ‘liquid history’ vintage cognacs and bespoke cocktails in as relaxed an environment as you’ll find outside your own home. This gentleness is perpetuated by discrete waiters and a tinkling pianist.

Its difficult to know whats a good yet cheap hotel in central London. Here is one that I tried and was very happy with.

A fantastic bargain in Central London

Kensington Close Hotel on Wrights Lane Kensington London

I got caught out with relatives visiting this weekend and the easiest thing to avoid sleeping on the floor of our apartment was to book a hotel in Kensington.
Bearing in mind it was the first weekend of Wimbledon and also the first day of the Oxford Street sales I was expecting a hefty price, however it seems that the recession and the lack of overseas visitors had helped my cause.
I found several local hotels which were still discounting and I plumbed for the Kensington Close Hotel on Wrights Lane which was only 5 minutes walk from where I live.

Kensington Close Hotel swimming pool

I paid £76 pounds for a double room, now that ,in Kensington, would usually get you a dump near Earls Court, so I was a little apprehensive about things.
What a suprise I got, the Kensington Close is quite good. Its not what I would call a 4 star but its a real good 3 star with the added bonus of a swimming pool which my wife took advantage of.
The bedroom (a twin) was bordering on small but acceptable and had air con and a small bathroom with a decent shower. Tea and coffee tray and a tv was there so I was happy.

Kensington Close Hotel standard double room

The bed was actually a good size and of a good quality so I got a proper nights sleep.
Now, bearing in mind that amazing price, you shouyld also be told that the Kensington Close’s location is absolutely ideal. Its just a three minute walk away from High Street Kensington tube station where you can catch trains all around central London. In the immediate area is the Royal Albert Hall, Hyde Park and the shops and restaurants of High Street Kensington.
In the evening, we strolled across the road to “Sticky Fingers” owned by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones where we eat mega portions of nachos and burgers. Highly recommended!
Also a stones throw away is the well acclaimed Devonshire Arms. Famed for its extensive range of draught beers & ciders, vast wine selection, and unmatched Sunday roast lunches, the pub has been serving the Kensington community for over 100 years.
The Kensington Close is a bargain at the weekends. I can not think of any other hotel in London at this price thats better value for money.
