I got caught out with relatives visiting this weekend and the easiest thing to avoid sleeping on the floor of our apartment was to book a hotel in Kensington.
Bearing in mind it was the first weekend of Wimbledon and also the first day of the Oxford Street sales I was expecting a hefty price, however it seems that the recession and the lack of overseas visitors had helped my cause.
I found several local hotels which were still discounting and I plumbed for the Kensington Close Hotel on Wrights Lane which was only 5 minutes walk from where I live.

I paid £76 pounds for a double room, now that ,in Kensington, would usually get you a dump near Earls Court, so I was a little apprehensive about things.
What a suprise I got, the Kensington Close is quite good. Its not what I would call a 4 star but its a real good 3 star with the added bonus of a swimming pool which my wife took advantage of.
The bedroom (a twin) was bordering on small but acceptable and had air con and a small bathroom with a decent shower. Tea and coffee tray and a tv was there so I was happy.

The bed was actually a good size and of a good quality so I got a proper nights sleep.
Now, bearing in mind that amazing price, you shouyld also be told that the Kensington Close’s location is absolutely ideal. Its just a three minute walk away from High Street Kensington tube station where you can catch trains all around central London. In the immediate area is the Royal Albert Hall, Hyde Park and the shops and restaurants of High Street Kensington.
In the evening, we strolled across the road to “Sticky Fingers” owned by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones where we eat mega portions of nachos and burgers. Highly recommended!
Also a stones throw away is the well acclaimed Devonshire Arms. Famed for its extensive range of draught beers & ciders, vast wine selection, and unmatched Sunday roast lunches, the pub has been serving the Kensington community for over 100 years.
The Kensington Close is a bargain at the weekends. I can not think of any other hotel in London at this price thats better value for money.
