ABOUT PICCADILLY

Piccadilly, one of London's most famous streets in the West End, runs from Hyde Park Corner to Piccadilly Circus and is 800 metres south of Oxford Street . Many decadent and famous buildings and sites line this street and it runs along several luscious parks.

The name Piccadilly derives from the work of a tailor named Robert Baker. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Baker made a living from designing, making and selling ´picadils´- the fashionable stiff collars worn is this era. His line of work made him a very wealthy man and the mansion he built with most of his fortune is known as Piccadilly Hall.

Piccadilly Circus, Hyde Park Corner and Green Park underground stations all have entrances on Piccadilly and it really is a lovely walk up and down this street if the weather is good and you have time on your side.

Fortnum & Mason department store is located on Piccadilly and is renowned for its upmarket food-hall. Here you can take afternoon tea in famous and very traditional surroundings. Also along the road is the Royal Academy art institution and the famous English Teddy Bear Co. For book lovers, the infamous Waterstone´s bookstore is located at 203-206 Piccadilly, in the old Simpson clothing store building, and is not too far from Piccadilly underground station. With almost 6 floors of books, a gift shop, coffee and juice bar and an art gallery, Waterstone´s on Piccadilly is more like an exclusive library and is the largest bookstore in Europe. Many hours to be lost in here!

And then there's ´The Ritz´, this glamorous hotel of splendour is located at 150 Piccadilly, overlooking Green Park, and is one of London's most famous landmarks. If you can't fit an overnight stay here into your budget, although they do often have special deals, you HAVE to pop in for tea and scones. It is so beautiful inside and the scones are delicious. Just a few minutes walk away is the Radisson Hampshire Hotel in Leicester Square, a long established 5 star in the heart of the action.

Another hotel which you might choose to stay at is Le Meridien Hotel at 21 Piccadilly. A great location and close to everything you need, especially the best London's shopping strips and nightlife.

For something a little different and very relaxing is the Piccadilly Markets in the gardens of St James's Church. It is a small arts and crafts market from Wednesday to Saturday including treats such as handmade greeting cards, knitwear and other little souvenirs, and Tuesday is antiques day. The Wren Coffee House in St James's Church serves drinks and homely vegetarian food. Piccadilly is part of the A4 road therefore it is very busy. But there are so many great places to spy, parks to rest in, treats to taste and books to read that the hustle and bustle is just part of the trip.

Piccadilly is mainly a tourist area and as such is noisy and busy 24 hours a day. It affords easy access to Leicester Square ( 200m), Soho (200m), Covent Garden (900m), Bond Street (900m) and the London Eye (1900m) however hotel prices are high and you may want to consider South Kensington as a better priced alternative which is only one mile to the west and has a direct underground link from Gloucester Road.
