The Royal Exchange is situated between Cornhill and Threadneedle Street, close to Bank Underground Station. This exclusive shopping area was originally the centre of commerce in the City of London. The original building and courtyard on this site was created in 1565 by Sir Thomas Gresham. After ceasing to be a major financial centre around 1939, the centre became home to many designer shops. Exclusive designer fashion boutiques from the likes of Gucci, Hermes and Paul Smith can be found at the Royal Exchange, as well as fine restaurants such as the Conran Restaurant Sauterelle, at The Courtyard, Royal Exchange EC3. This renowned restaurant serves fine seasonal cuisine for both lunch and dinner, in luxurious surroundings. The Royal Exchange is also renowned for its many exclusive jewellers, such as Tiffany & Co and De Beers, famous for its exclusive diamond collections. The Royal Exchange is home to the Artisan gallery, which has various exhibitions throughout the year and also displays work in the courtyard here, next to the Conran Grand Cafe and Bar. The Royal Exchange is a delightful place for shopping, or to simply explore or take a break with a refreshing drink in the delightful courtyard, which can also be hired for private functions.

The Royal Exchange is close to a number of landmarks within the City of London. These include the historic Bank of England building, which is also located on Threadneedle Street, 50m from the Royal Exchange. The official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, Mansion House, is 100m from the Royal Exchange on Walbrook EC4. Another impressive landmark 300m from the Royal Exchange is the Guildhall, situated on Basinghall Street EC2. This magnificent building, home to the Corporation of London, has a large library and is also the location of London's Clock Museum. Visitors to the Royal Exchange can head east along Cornhill to reach Bishopsgate EC2, which is just 200m away. The exclusive Leadenhall Market, which is an excellent place to purchase quality food and wine, is situated in Bishopsgate in close proximity to the controversial Lloyd's of London building, on Lime Street EC2. The stunning Swiss Re building, more widely known as the 'Gherkin, is positioned 500m east of the Royal Exchange, at 30 St Mary Axe. This is close to the huge Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, which is situated on Old Broad Street EC2. Both these world famous structures are predominant features of London's skyline.

The Royal Exchange is next to Bank Underground, which is served by the Central, Circle, District, Northern, and Waterloo & City lines, in addition to Docklands Light Railway (DLR). Liverpool Street Station is located 600m from the Royal Exchange, at the northern end of Old Broad Street. Other stations within reach of the Royal Exchange include Mansion House (400m) Monument (300m) and Moorgate (500m). Visitors to the Royal Exchange can head east from St Paul's Underground Station, which is on the Central line, along Cheapside. This station is 400m from the Royal Exchange and is just four stops from Oxford Circus, in the heart of London's famous West End.
