| The Swiss Re building is on St Mary Axe EC3, between Bevis Marks EC3 and Leadenhall Street. Home to the Swiss Re insurance company and other businesses, the 40 storey tower, which is often referred to as the Gherkin, opened in May 2004. The Swiss Re was designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners, who produced a unique self ventilating tower that would be energy efficient.
The Swiss Re building won the 2004 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize in 2004. This skyscraper is 179.8 metres high and has a restaurant and lounge bar on its top floor, managed by renowned catering company Searcy's, which offers amazing panoramic views across London, of landmarks including St Pauls Cathedral and Tower Bridge. There is a plaza with retail outlets and leisure facilities located at ground level and the Swiss Re's Arcadian garden is also open to the public.
