Wood Street runs from Cheapside at the southern end, through Gresham Street and London Wall, leading north into Fore Street. The name Wood Street was derived from the many wood merchants that worked on this site in medieval times. Wood Street was popular with drapers, haberdashers and milliners from the mid 19th century well into the 20th century. The headquarters of the City of London Police, which is located at 37 Wood Street EC2, house a small museum outlining the history of policing within the City of London. The churches of St Alban, which has a Grade 1 listed tower still standing today, St Michael and St Peter West Cheap were all once located on Wood Street. |
