St Magnus the Martyr
The St Magnus the Martyr church is located on Lower Thames Street, close to the Monument, which is situated along Fish Hill Street EC3 and Monument Street. St Magnus the Martyr has been on this site for over 1000 years and was redesigned by Sir Christopher Wren during the period he worked on the Monument, after the original was ruined in the Great Fire of London, which started in nearby Pudding Lane EC3. The church formed part of the original entrance to London Bridge and visitors can still see this impressive section of the church today. Interesting features inside St Magnus the Martyr include a detailed model of old London Bridge. A 185 foot high steeple was added to this stunning building in 1706. St Magnus the Martyr is open everyday between 10.00 – 16.00, except Saturdays.
St Magnus the Martyr stands close to the River Thames and many places of interest in this area of the City of London, including Old Billingsgate Market, located at 1 Old Billingsgate Walk, 16 Lower Thames Street EC3. This former Victorian fish market is now a contemporary events and conference centre. Old Billingsgate Market, which has on site parking and technical facilities, is also used as a party and concert venue. Other landmarks close to St Magnus the Martyr include the Royal Exchange and the impressive Bank of England building, which are both 500m away, as well as Mansion House (400m). These historic buildings, located next to Bank Underground, can be reached via King William Street EC3. St Magnus the Martyr's closest underground station is Monument, which is linked to Bank Underground and served by the Central, Circle, District, Northern and Waterloo & City lines, as well as the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Bank Underground is 350m from St Magnus the Martyr, along King William Street. Other underground stations in this area include Cannon Street, 300m from St Magnus the Martyr on Dowgate Hill EC4 and Mansion House, 400m away on Queen Victoria Street EC4. The Tower Millennium Pier is located 400m east of St Magnus the Martyr on Lower Thames Street. This is a stop of the Thames Clipper shuttle boat service, which travels to various locations in the City of London along the Thames, including the London Eye, Tate Modern and the Saachi Gallery. Managed by Transport for London, the Thames Clippers provide an excellent way of commuting for both business and leisure passengers.
