LONDON EC3 INDEX

St Mary Axe EC3 is positioned between Leadenhall Street at its southern point, stretching to the junction of Camomile Street EC3 and Bevis Marks EC3 to the north. St Mary Axe gains its name from the St Mary Axe church, which was situated nearby. It is claimed an axe used by Attila the Hun to kill 11,000 virgins is kept at the church, which is how it got its name. St Mary Axe is in an excellent location within the centre of the City of London, close to many office buildings and landmarks, most notably the Swiss Re tower, often referred to as the 'Gherkin'.

The Swiss Re tower, located at 30 St Mary Axe, is occupied by the Swiss Re reinsurance company, in addition to other organisations. This 40 floor structure, designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners, was officially opened in May 2004. The Swiss Re tower was constructed using recycled or recyclable materials wherever possible, in an attempt to create an environmentally friendly skyscraper, which is energy efficient. This elegant tower, which dominates the London skyline, is 178.8 metres high and has 18 lifts to transport workers. There are retail and leisure facilities in the basement of Swiss Re and its plaza and Arcadian Garden are open for the public to enjoy. Quality food and clothing outlet Marks and Spencer is located at Leadenhall Court EC3, at the junction of Leadenhall Street and St Mary Axe.

St Mary Axe is 50m from the striking Lloyd's of London building, located on Leadenhall Street and Lime Street EC3. This stainless steel structure, which was designed by Richard Rogers, was officially opened in 1986 and remains a major feature within the City of London. The historic Leadenhall Market is situated next to the Lloyds Tower. This traditional market is covered by an intricately decorated glass and iron roof. With traditional butchers and fishmongers, as well as shops selling fine wine and chocolate, Leadenhall Market is a must see. St Etherburga's Church, said to be the only church in the City not to be damaged by the Great Fire of London, is 150m from St Mary Axe along Bishopsgate.

St Mary Axe is 250m from Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, which stands at 25 Old Broad Street EC3. This huge structure was once the tallest building in the UK. Rhodes Twenty Four, an excellent restaurant run by British chef Gary Rhodes, is located in Tower 42, as is the Vertigo 42 restaurant and champagne bar, which provides amazing panoramic views of the London skyline, of landmarks including St Pauls Cathedral, the Monument and the BT Tower.

St Mary Axe is 250m from Liverpool Street Station, which can be reached via Bishopsgate. Liverpool Street Underground Station is served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines and is one stop from Bank Underground. Visitors should travel to Bank to find the impressive Bank of England building and museum, Mansion House and the Royal Exchange, home to exclusive jewellers De Beers and Tiffany & Co, as well as the exquisite Conran Sauterelle restaurant and the Artisan gallery, at 35 Courtyard Royal Exchange EC3.
