Located on Ludgate Hill in the City of London, St Paul´s Cathedral is one of London's most visited sites as well as one of the world's most celebrated churches.
There has been a cathedral dedicated to St Paul on the same site as today's cathedral since 604AD. The current cathedral (widely recognized as the fifth St Paul´s) dates from the 17th century. Built between 1675 and 1708, the cathedral is the design of court architect Sir Christopher Wren who was commissioned to rebuild it after the Great Fire of 1666. So hot was the heat created by that fire, the lead roof on the original St Paul´s Cathedral actually melted. Interestingly, Wren's reconstruction of St Paul´s was complete on his 76th birthday, 20 October 1708, more than 30 years after the Great Fire.
In total 85 churches were destroyed during the Great Fire of London, yet remarkably, only five people died as result of it. Much of the rebuilding throughout the City and London was in the hands of Wren. His works, including many other churches and landmarks in the City and throughout London, remain significant fixtures of the London skyline, but none more so than Wren's acclaimed reconstruction of St Paul´s Cathedral.
Most striking of the cathedral's features is its large and memorable dome. The world-famous dome was inspired by St Peter's Basilica in Rome, which is 365 feet (108 metres) high with a cross at its apex. Just as breathtaking, are the cathedral's interior features mosaics, carvings, and vantage points with gorgeous views. The cathedral is open to the public, with a charge for non-worshipping visitors. Moreover, the cathedral is so huge that it can be seen from all around London. Set centrally in the City of London, St Paul´s Cathedral has few equals with respect to perfect meeting/starting points for a day of sightseeing. Popular attractions, such as the Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern, the Golden Hinde and Borough Market (to name but a few!), are all well within easy walking distance. Proximity to St Paul´s Tube Station (serviced by the Central Line) and other nearby Tube stations add to the convenience of visiting St Paul´s and its environs. A number of cafes, eateries and other services cater to the many people visiting this iconic landmark.
