LONDON EC3 INDEX

The Swiss Re building is located at 30 St Mary Axe EC3, between Bevis Marks EC3 and Leadenhall Street. Home to the Swiss Re insurance company and other businesses, the 40 storey Swiss Re tower, which is often referred to as the Gherkin, opened in May 2004. The Swiss Re was designed by Sir Norman Foster and Partners, who produced a unique self ventilating tower that would be energy efficient. Recycled and recyclable materials were used in the construction of the Swiss Re wherever possible.

The Swiss Re building won the 2004 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize in 2004. This skyscraper is 179.8 metres high and has a restaurant and lounge bar on its top floor, managed by renowned catering company Searcy's, which offers amazing panoramic views across London, of landmarks including St Pauls Cathedral and Tower Bridge. There is a plaza with retail outlets and leisure facilities located at ground level and the Swiss Re's Arcadian garden is also open to the public.

The Swiss Re building is located 150m east of Bishopsgate, via Camomile Street EC3. Bishopsgate is 50m from Tower 42, formerly the NatWest Tower, which is located at 25 Old Broad Street EC3. This 183m tower was once the tallest building in Britain and is now owned by the Greycoat property company. Rhodes Twenty Four, is a popular restaurant located in Tower 42, run by renowned British chef Gary Rhodes. The Vertigo 42 restaurant and champagne bar is positioned at the top of Tower 42 and supplies fine seafood in a luxurious setting, with excellent views of the London skyline. Bishopsgate leads into Gracechurch Street in a southern direction, close to the location of the Monument on Monument Street EC3 and Fish Street Hill EC3. Visitors can climb the 311 steps here to the 41 metre high viewing platform, which looks out on landmarks including London Bridge, the BT Tower and St Paul's Cathedral.

St Mary Axe, home of the Swiss Re, has a junction with Leadenhall Street, a major road within the EC3 area of the City of London. The controversial Lloyd's of London building is located between Leadenhall Street and Lime Street EC3. This imposing glass and steel structure was designed by architect Richard Rogers and remains a popular sight within the City. The exclusive Leadenhall Market is situated close to the Lloyd's Tower, between Gracechurch Street and Lime Street. Leadenhall Market is home to quality butchers and fishmongers, as well as the Lamb Tavern and the Cotriani Italian restaurant, located at 48-52 Leadenhall Market EC3.

The Swiss Re headquarters are close to a number of mainline and London Underground stations, including Liverpool Street Station, 300m north via Bishopsgate. Other stations include Aldgate, 300m east on Aldgate High Street, Tower Hill (500m south) and Bank, which is 450, west of the Swiss Re. Bank Underground is next to the Bank of England building, Mansion House and Royal Exchange, home to the Artisan Gallery and designer jewellers Tiffany & Co and De Beers.
